help & FAQs Why do you charge for your services when you get an Arts Council England grant?

Since inception in 1980, a-n has charged for subscriptions, although the rates have always been cheaper for artists than for anyone else. Arts Council England's grant is only 23% of our turnover. The rest is earned from subscription, retail and advertising sales. Without the Arts Council grant, the subscription cost would increase by £14. help & FAQs Why can't you do everything in printed publications like you used to?

Like everyone else who receives arts subsidy, we have had cuts. Earned income has also been affected as arts businesses close and people can't afford to buy as much as they used to. We have to find ways to "make ends meet" without increasing our subscriptions and sales charges. We have to invest in the R&D that creates the new products and services you'll need in future. So we are shaving and streamlining overhead and production costs wherever we can. Where online publication provides a more comprehensive service - with 24/7 access and the opportunity for you to post and comment - we'll be using this rather than print as the dissemination route.
