700IS Reindeerland is an international experimental film and video festival in East Iceland. It is open to everyone and we select from up to 100 films every year that are screened in East Iceland before going on an International tour. In 2008 the winning film of the festival was Collision by Max Hattler, a German artist based in the UK who was invited to Iceland and received prize money. The Icelandic film of the festival 2008 was Noise sequences by Þórður Grímsson and he was also invited to the festival as well as receiving prize money.

In a country where it is hard to travel during the winter, no trains or buses, only expensive internal flights, art lovers would normally have to travel to the capital to see events like this. Egilsstadir where the main event takes place is 700 km away from the capital and faces decreases in numbers of inhabitants, it is fighting for its young people to come back after University studies. This is why an event like 700IS Reindeerland is seen as an extremely positive force for creating interesting jobs and positive publicity for the region.

700IS Reindeerland is also well known for the quality of programming. The 2008 festival theme was performance on camera and included 150 films and videos throughout the week; a special screening by curator Alexei Dmitriv from St. Petersburg, Russia; Canadian film director Jason Rodi and Icelandic film director and visual artist Hildur Margrétardóttir. There was also a road trip to Höfn Art Centre where ATA San Francisco had prepared a screening with the directors of 700IS of 30 films. The guests also saw reindeers, walked on a glacier and saw northern lights on the way back!
