Art in the Garden 2008

13 January 2009

Art in the Garden is an established exhibition of contemporary art and design. By advertising in A-N magazine we are targeting exciting, innovative artists. We have numerous artists approaching us with submissions of work for inclusion in our annual Art in the Garden exhibition. Both established and newly graduated artists are encouraged, sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens in a series of garden rooms.

Art in the Garden includes a residency, allowing an established artist to create a body of work inspired by the Gardens’ collections. The 2008 winner was Rebecca Newnham, whose mosaic sculpture ‘Quercus’ was inspired by the geometry of the oak leaf and produced after undertaking research with the garden’s experienced horticultural staff. The chosen artist also mentors a new graduate for one week in the gardens. This year Rebecca Newnham and newly graduated art student, Charlotte Hess, worked together by weaving pollarded willows. The resulting form was a blend of Rebeccas’s love of natural, organic forms and Charlotte’s interest in the human anatomy.

Art in the Garden is visited by thousands of people each year and offers a unique platform for artists to display their work.
