Annual insurance policy
Artists' insurance policy (AIP)
Outlining the Artists Insurance Policy and its key features for AIR members.
In addition to the free £5m Public and products liability (PPL) insurance for UK-based AIR members, brokers Hencilla Canworth Ltd and a-n The Artists Information Company have developed the Artists’ Insurance Policy (AIP) for practising visual and applied artists. This enables AIR members to buy additional insurance such as for artwork and materials, studio and contents, and employers’ liability at a highly competitive price, with policy benefits tailored to reflect the diversity of work practice and professional requirements of visual and applied artists. Through negotiations with policy underwriters, AIR members exclusively benefit from discounted premiums, lower excesses and enhanced cover.
Practising individual visual and applied artists who are not already AIR members can join AIR by buying an a-n+AIR subscription online in order to be eligible to purchase the Artists’ Insurance Policy. To join go to www.a-n.co.uk/subscribe.
Activities
The Artists’ Insurance Policy (AIP) covers a range of risks for visual or applied artists. ‘Visual or applied art’ includes painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital or time-based media, sculpture, ceramics, community arts, glassmaking, textiles, jewellery, mixed media, interactive arts, crafts, live art and physical performances.
Geographical scope
AIP is available to purchase by AIR members who normally practice in the UK and includes temporary work undertaken outside the UK, although special terms and/or higher premiums may apply for work in USA or Canada.
Main policy benefits
• All risks' cover for artwork including stock of materials and work-in-progress
• Completed work insured for net sale price
• Worldwide cover available including exhibition, storage and transit risks
• Cover for tools, equipment and studio contents
• Automatic cover for reduction in gross profit following an insured incident
• Employers' Liability and additional Public Liability Insurance as required
How to apply for quotation or cover
EITHER: you select from four ‘off the peg’ options summarised below, created for AIR members based on surveys of likely needs and at a highly competitive cost, that provide the same benefits as the main policy but with alternative ‘bands’ providing different maximum levels of cover.
OR you can ask for an AIP Individual quotation.

2 You should select the option that will protect against the maximum value of risk, as under-insurance will lead to subsequent claims being proportionately reduced. For example if you choose Option 2 that includes artworks cover up to total value of £7,500 and at the time a claim is made your artwork has a value of £15,000, any claim you make will be reduced by 50%.This is often called ‘averaging’.

I am currently covered through AIR as an individual. Together with a colleague (also covered) we are negotiating rental of building to set up studios for sublet, gallery and spaceto run workshops - what additional cover might we need? Thank you.
