Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council Commissions [ 29 October 2010 ]
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council are seeking artists to create a diverse range of public artworks to complement and enhance the public realm in its principle town, Pontypridd. These commissions form an integral part of a wider regeneration programme for Pontypridd town centre that will transform its public spaces through upgrading the public realm, ensure diversity and distinctiveness through the introduction of high quality materials and bespoke features, and strengthen the commercial core of town through investing in the townscape. Pontypridd is a town with a strong cultural identity, and we encourage the creation of artworks that has the town’s cultural past and present at their core. Due to the varying locations, scale and nature of the proposals the art commissions have been divided into five lots, with a public artist anticipated to take responsibility for each lot, however public artists are allowed to bid for a single or multiple lots. The Council is therefore looking to procure the services of a number of public artists: initially to prepare design concepts, before undertaking detailed designs, and then fabricating and installing pubic artwork's. The appointed public artists will be suitably experienced in successfully delivered artworks of a similar nature and scale, capable of working within constrained budgets and timescales, effective in community collaboration and engagement, and capable of working efficiently as part of a wider project team containing engineers and urban designers. The public artworks, and wider regeneration activity for Pontypridd are progressing following significant investment from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund, Targeted Match Funding, and Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC.
