Following on from the hugely successful Starter For Ten scheme which has seen The Shed thrive over the past 18 months, we're thrilled to announce the next phase for rent and rate free space for creative businesses within Gateshead.The Garden Shed is an opportunity to grow your creativity in the grounds of one of Gateshead's stunning historic estates. We're offering rent and rates-free workspace in the grounds of Gibside Estate in west Gateshead for creative people to develop their practice or business. Spaces range from restored historic stables to timber buildings and canvas structures. Starter for Ten is an innovative programme led by Gateshead Council's Economic Development Service in association with the designer Wayne Hemingway. It involves the re-use of empty properties to provide temporary workspace for emerging creative enterprises, while at the same time helping to revitalise the areas in which they are located. Specific duties include co-ordinating appropriate professional/business development support to the creative businesses, developing and implementing a programme of events at the building to promote the work of the occupants and developing and hosting additional events and initiatives to increase the profile of The Shed as a cultural venue. You will also be responsible for securing additional project funding from public and private sources as and when required and will also develop and manage a marketing and press plan for The Shed including organising press launches, distribution of print and other related activity. Starter for Ten is a pilot project aimed at revitalising Gateshead centre ahead of its planned redevelopment and providing temporary workspace for creative people. The council are working with designer Wayne Hemingway to offer creative people a 'starter for ten' – in other words, the opportunity for ten or more individuals or groups to develop a creative business or practice in rent free workspace for up to approximately two years.
