Zelli Award 2008

30 July 2008

Every eighteen months Zelli Porcelain hosts the Zelli Award, an international competition for new porcelain sculpture. This year 140 artists from 22 countries entered works on the theme of 'Dreams and Visions'. Eight pieces of poetry were selected to inspire the artists,  ranging from Gilgamesh of 3000 BC to Blake and Yeats.

The exhibition took place at Zelli in March, with works selected by judges Paul Atterbury and Sister Wendy Beckett. The first Prize of £3000 was awarded to Linda Kieft for her monumental sculpture showing 'Enkidu's dream' from Gilgamesh. Two pieces illustrating William Blake's 'Auguries of Innocence' highlighted the variety of approaches on display: a strong architectural sense controlled Clive Soord’s assemblage, while  Rebecca Maeder's form evoked both serenity and menace in a shape representing the force of life.

Past Winners are Michael Flynn, Clive Soord, Kate McBriode, Natasha  Mayo, Linda Kieft and Yeuh Yin Taffs. Details of the sixth Zelli Award, whose theme is 'Proverbs' will be published in September 2008.
