Connections into the visual arts for all visual
and applied artists
13 January 2009
Making Spaces, an exhibition touring Fife in MAC, Fife Councils mobile museum, was on the road by March 2008. The exhibition explored examples of different working spaces used by artists and makers past and present.
Making Spaces includes artists in residence who accompany MAC as it tours Fife. They were selected following successful advertising through AN and various artists networks in 2007, and come from a diverse range of fields within contemporary visual art and craft. They give a direct and personal insight into where and how they develop their work through activities such as talks and workshops.
From March to June the artists in residence were Malcolm Cruickshank and Jenny Smith - a textile artist and visual artist respectively, and both winners at the last Visual Artists Scotland awards at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. During the summer Kevin Reid, originally from Kelty, returned to Fife to organise a variety of original art activities as MAC continued to visit community venues and also several festivals. For the final part of the year, September to December, the artists on board are printmaker Elspeth Lamb and ceramicist Frances Priest.
Making Spaces is proving to be an exciting Fife-wide project in the way it combines an exhibition with artists residencies. It introduces new audiences to contemporary artists and their art in a hands on way, which both directly engages with and also encourages visitors who may have had little or no previous experience of art events.
Support from the Ernest Cook Trust, the Robertson Trust, the Friends of the Crawford Arts Centre and the Regional Development Challenge Fund (Digital Resources Development Team) made this complex project possible.
