Choice blog - Laura Alabaf selects Jo Farnell

Within a few seconds of scrolling down Jo Farnell’s blog you see Kevin Bacon’s face on bright neon, some deconstructed toys and a piece of wood chip wall paper with the words “you said you were an artist, why did you lie?’ written on it. Already I’m intrigued.

There’s something about this blog that makes it incredibly readable. The work is playful, tactile and humble in it’s approach to the subject matter. The artist is drawn to ideas around lies, untruths and falsehood. The intuitive use of everyday materials, sometimes using things that are to hand, in an ad-hoc way seeing what the material can do is effectively narrated.

The artist writes briefly and concisely about the ideas and thoughts around their practice at that time, there is the feel of the sketchbook, they’re thinking through something and using the blog as a space to play around with concepts. As the title eludes to, show your working out.

The blog speaks of something I think all artists intrinsically do, find something that interests them, as Jo mentions picking things up from charity shop’s and the dump, then try to make art out of it, to some extent always unsure of what first drew them to that initial object/subject or whatever it may be, and slowly dissecting the content and exploring all that comes out of it. It’s interesting to see this unfold in digestible snippets of text and image.
