I'm about to do some poetry and illustration workshops, and after looking at the cover on the AN site, I rang air insurers and was told that if I do writing and art workshops, I would be covered by the AIR policy only for the art components in the workshop, and not for the writing components.

The a-n+AIR PPL policy summary states that the following activities are covered: (a) the making, designing, creating, preparing, installing, selecting, exhibiting and display of any works of visual or applied art (including works not created by yourself). (b) the lecturing, teaching or demonstrating of visual or applied art including (but not limited to) workshops, residencies and community projects. ‘Visual or applied art’ includes but is not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital or time-based media, sculpture, ceramics, community arts, glassmaking, textiles, jewellery, mixed media, interactive arts, crafts, live art and physical performances.of the kinds of artists' activities. This description of cover is reviewed with the insurers and underwriters from time to time to take into account artists' changing practices.

p.s. that should be 'socially engaged'
posted on 2013-02-12 by Malcolm Dunlop
I have been informed by the AIR PLI providers that this ins cover doesn't include creative writing. I'm aware that many professional artists like me include writing components in their practice - especially 'social engagemed' practice, as well as free lance artist/educators.

I realise that we get a lot for the money, however, it is a steep price hike, especially when it is all online now so there are cost savings for A-N I have renewed anyway, but hope that there will be no more price hikes like this next year!

For £36 fee artists gain a range of benefits including: - £5m public and products liability insurance - password to access all website content including online contracts and toolkits, guides and resources and the publications archive - invites to and discounts off events, services and partner services (such as off the membership to Engage recently launched) - promote your exhibitions / events + image on interface The price includes VAT (now at 20%)

I also feel that an £11 price hike when we no longer receive a magazine and have to 'read' online is possibly too steep, and the promotion code is misleading. I will have to think about renewal under these circumstances.

It cost £25 last year for the Artist+AIR Online subscription. Am I missing something? A £11 price hike seems quite a lot.

Please note: The total discount is £3.00 but because VAT is now charged on all subscriptions, the net amount discounted is £2.50 but the gross amount is £3.00. We will work to update this to make it clearer on our site. Many thanks for your comment.

I especially like the way, 1, comments are ignored, and 2 a £3 promotional code by email becomes £2.50 when its time to pay - what's going on at AN? You should have a lot more time now there's no monthly mag to attend to! Maybe invest in a calculator!

Why am I not entitled to the Offer with the promotion code for an artist subscription + air membership? It says the promotion code is not valid but that is exactly what I am renewing.

Thank for your your enquiry. The additional charge is due to the postage and packing costs for sending out the introductory material including receipt you receive on purchase. Once it is possible for us to deliver this electronically, we shall review the rates offered.

Hi Susan, I spoke with the AIR providers again today, and they said the policy does not cover cross disciplinary activities involving creative writing for example, that artists might use in workshops. This may affect a lot of visual artists who assume they are covered for delivering workshops etc: those who work in socially engaged practice, for example, those working with text based media, time based, live work, artists engaged to work with particular communities, and would affect (as confirmed by the AP at the insurance providers) graphic artists, graphic novelists, illustrators and others. Artists will often be required to draw upon various skills when taking on work in the field of visual arts. Someone leading workshops inspired by the work of William Blake, for example, Mervyn Peake, Sylvia Plath, even more conventional painters of landscape such as Kurt Jackson who incorporates writing into his paintings.
