Rosalind Davis

ROSALIND DAVIS

London-based mixed media painter creating paintings of dystopian landscapes which incorporate paint embroidery and floral-print. Rosalind Davis is a graduate from the RCA and Chelsea College of Art and has exhibited nationally and internationally with work in private and public collections. In 2012 her work her work shall be entered into the Courtauld Institute East Wing X exhibition 2012- 13.

Between 2009-11 she co-founded, curated and managed Core Gallery a dynamic artist-led gallery space in Deptford London, working in collaboration with over 200 artists and
curators. Davis also co-founded and managed DIY Educate an artists professional development programme co-founded with Annabel Tilley. She has recently
left Core Gallery to set up a new artist led organisation ZeitgeistArtProjects where future DIY Educate events and curated exhibition will be housed.

She is a freelance lecturer for UAL, RCA and others, a creative practitioner As a writer she has contributed to The Guardian, a-n, Jotta and Artlicks. as well as an acclaimed blogger on a-n Artists talking.

'The Castle', 85x65cm, 2009 . I seek out structures that may seem neglected but for the individuals who use these buildings they are a refuge and of vital importance; they are a means of survival in bleak urban cityscapes such as this pub on a council estate in Southwark
In an area of widespread social deprivation that may seem hostile, threatening or full of pathos. Their creation, evolution and destruction can also be divisive.

'Survival Part I ', Acrylic, collage and embroidery on cotton poplin. Inspired by my trip to Cameroon, West Africa. In Cameroon, as in many societies the church is the pillar of the community. I was interested in the duality of the benign and sometimes menacing elements of the church;its all-pervading beliefs and ethical code, which in itself brings about death, historic and current, as the most recent Pope condemns the use of condoms and thus perpetuating the HIV/AIDS virus.
The church however is also a means of bringing communities and people together, a place of charity and family.

'Inheritance Part II ', Acrylic and embroidery on cotton , 2008. Part of Deptford X Festival. I completed 2 artworks that were informed by 2 very diverse community centres used by different groups in Deptford. The Stephen Lawrence Centre and The Royal British Legion.
An exhibition then was held at the Stephen Lawrence Centre with sound interviews also used of the users of these centres.
I did a four week workshop with young people at The Centre and their work was also exhibited at the centre.

Rosalind Davis , '109 Hectares', Oil and Embroidery on poly-silk . 65x65cm Final Version of 109 Hectares, which refers to the surface area of the land on which the Kidbrooke / Ferriers estate was built. Only a handful of people still live here. Unable or unwilling to leave. A hectare is the size of a football field.

Rosalind Davis , '26 Remain', Oil and Embroidery on poly-silk . 65x65cmThere are 26 remaining families in the Kidbroke/Ferriers Estate. As I walked around the estate it looked completely uninhabited, a real ghost town, with a charged silence. then, occassionally I would come across a house or flat that was lived in. the Residents that are left are home owners, who used their right to buy options many years ago. Now they are pretty much stuck there as the market value of these flats and houses are not enough for them to be able to buy another home. Anecdotal evidence from residents says gangs patrol there, there are ants and rats. Some of them remember the happier times, of communities and parties. To be stuck there is unimaginable and tragic.

Rosalind Davis, 'The Watchtower ', Embroidery on Damask . A watchtower in India, a colonial outpost. I was interested in juxtaposing something very manmade and aggressive with the softness of embroidery , subverting both medium and subject.

Rosalind Davis, '8,000 Souls Prep drawing', Pencil and Pen on paper . these prepatory drawings are part of my process of working out my paintings. Usually they were a lot looser than the end resulting painting. It was the qualities of the drawings that the artist Matthew Atkinson pointed out as being of interest, there was an intimacy and freedom, which I ( hopefully) carried into my last few works. Peer networks are very important!
