Honour and recognition in case of success" All I read (in the other part of the advert) NO PREVIOUS POLAR EXPERIENCE NEEDED!  Then when I thought,,, this'll do me.I couldn't try out at the time, but two years later the opportunity to try out for another expedition came up and I went for it not really knowing what I was letting myself in for and not really caring; just following that dream to walk through the Arctic. So back in Sept 06 I tried out and got accepted into a training squad.  Since that initial weekend I've undertaken training weekends in Dartmoor and Wales working on navigation and camp craft etc and also spent a week in Norway (Jan 07) learning how to cross country ski and undertaken first aid training. It feels nice to belong to a team and it felt really good when I was offered the opportunity to train.  Sometimes all you need is someone to say, 'You can do this', and a whole new world can open up for you.So I'm putting all my previous training to test with three-weeks training in Finnmark.  Finnmark is north of the Arctic Circle and is situated in the Aurora Borealis zone (Northern Lights).  It's a county in the northeast of Norway and has Finland to its south and Russia to its east.  Other facts: It has midnight sun from the middle of May until late July. And in the two months of the winter, from late November to late January, the county experiences polar nights where the sun is always below the horizon. As a consequence, there is continuous daylight from early May to early August. For more info on Finnmark see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnmark  ... I can barely contain my excitement ;) The Whiz Away is a genius contraption that lets women wee standing up, lying down etc   See pic ->Think no bare bums in chilly conditions and no leaving the tent in the middle of the night - you can use it in your sleeping bag by attaching the whiz away to a drainage bag (so this also doubles as a hot water bottle) mmm warm wee :)I'm also getting excited about my Brynje double layered thermal underwear order, which should be arriving soon.  Sad but true. It combines a double layer of Meraklon Super Thermo net and Merino wool to ensure you are super warm and that your sweat gets wicked away from your skin so if it freezes, it doesn't freeze on you.  Having the right gear is really important of course, so I'm right to get excited about my Brynje thermals (this is what I tell myself ;)  Plus, I've never received a parcel from Norway before! When I started to get my kit together for this trip I was overwhelmed.  It seemed like everyone was talking double Dutch! I had to learn about layering systems and which materials worked well, which didn't... and then to make things even harder I was told that you had to experiment with kit yourself as everyone is different and bodies like and dislike different things.  This is true and makes sense, but it's hard to experiment when you're on a limited budget!Anyway, I've ordered the thermal shirt, boxer shorts and longs with fly (for whiz away access of course!) See Brynje... I wrote most of my diary last thing at night from the warmth of my sleeping bag and some are upbeat, but many are tired-beat, just warning you!  I'm also kind of glad I didn't write a live blog because I found it hard enough doing the training and I think the blog would've been an added pressure at this stage.I also took lots photos and I'll share them with you throughout my postings.  I loved taking photos out there.  I couldn't believe how some of the images looked.  I liked looking back over my photos from time to time again during the trip, especially when I was feeling a bit quiet.  I also liked showing them to people in the group.I used my new camera, a Canon 30D with a Lowepro sling bag, so I could just slide the bag around from my back to front when I wanted to take a pic.  The 30D rocks and I slept with spare camera batteries to keep them warm, the cold deadens batteries and dead batteries would've been very depressing.The three-weeks in Finnmark were both physically and mentally demanding.  I experienced some amazing things, highs and lows AND found out a lot about myself.  But I'm still the same person I was before I left, and the world keeps on spinning even though you leave it all behind.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 [4 November 2007] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 In my previous post I said I was going to share my diary extracts with you... and I tried this, but it didn't work for me. I didn't set out to share my diary, so it felt like it was too personal to publish.  But what I've done instead is write an account of the trip. I hope you enjoy it :)Getting ThereI met my team the night before we flew to Oslo and we packed up our pulks with team kit and bubble wrapped them so they would be protected in transport.  (Pulks are the sledges you pull using your harness).  I had a feeling I'd forgotten something, but you just have to trust your packing and as you've seen above (or below depending on which way your reading this blog!) I was fairly meticulous with my packing and this is an aspect of planning I really enjoy. We got through the airport check in without having to pay for extra weight/baggage, this was mainly down to Janey lifing the pulks when the airline woman was weighing them. Very devious, but clever! It should also be noted that there is an art to pushing three pulks piled on top of each other on an airport trolley... and this art comes naturally to some, and not to others.  Lets just say most people moved out of our way :)We flew from Heathrow to Oslo and then Oslo to Tromso.  When we finally arrived at Tromso Camping it was dark, icy as hell and you could see the stars, mountains and northern lights through the sharp, crystal clear evening sky. Most people wanted to get an early night, but my soon to be ‘pulk partner' Mike and other team mate Rowan decided we should celebrate the beginning of our adventure with a juicy steak and beer.  And so it was, my first night within the Arctic Circle.... I choose Mike to be my pulk buddy, who was a good choice because Mike has the strength of ten thousand men!We split up various team kit and Mike and I got the big team tent.   In our pulk we had roughly the following:2 x kit bags (which had all our personal gear in - see previous list)Team tent4 x cans of fuel3-weeks worth of expedition food (couple of large bin bags full)We were both shocked at how heavy the pulk felt at first and we were convinced we had the heaviest one, that was until we lifted everyone else's!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 [18 November 2007] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 The first campWe set off and didn't go on for too long before we pitched up to camp.  This first leg was a struggle as most of us had no experience pulling pulks and had previously only done one-week's worth of cross country skiing.Setting up camp was also difficult.  The snow was thick and up to our thighs, it was dark and we were still finding the best ways of working as a team.  We had two tents.  One large tent that we slept eight in, (but it could accommodate more) and then we had a satellite tent, in which we slept four.  The satellite tent became the ‘sick' tent for a while in the training, but then eventually became the ‘I want to sleep as far away from all the snoring men as possible' tent later on and we took it in turns to sleep in it.As soon as bedtime comes, it became a scrap to find your space and not be the last one fannying around.   In the beginning bedtime was a serious affair, but it soon turned into a farce, with Dave the instructor always tutting at how we'd aligned ourselves in the tent and Janey's bed time story requests.  Mike gave the best story...  It was about Borris, a cross dressing crab who married a ballerina :)My first night in the tent wasn't the best.  I was really uncomfortable and felt a bit claustrophobic.  The sleeping bags we use have huge hoods to keep you warm, but then I had a bivvy bag around the outside and over the top and a vapour barrior liner on the inside which stops your sweat from dampening the bag throughout the night.  The fact that I could hardly move around in my bag, coupled with the lumps of ice underneath my sleeping mat meant I was feeling really relaxed when the en-mass snoring started!I eventually got some sleep, but it wasn't much.  This was just par for the course really.  Some nights you just didn't get much sleep, which added to your general knackeredness.  As the expedition went on though, you became more tired because of the huge amounts of physical work you were doing, so eventually you did sleep better... and snoring, what snoring? Eventually, you could sleep just like that!... They say what time we're leaving camp and then time all breaks throughout the day.  We generally left each camp before 9am, after being up since 7am and 6am if you were on breakfast duty.  As the breakfast duty was on average taking 2.5-3 hours, everybody who wasnt on duty would get the rest of the camp in order by sorting themselves out, taking down the tents and filling in the toilet area before we left.  On an actual expedition which had a smaller group, the cooking and start up time would be reduced.Once we set off pulling our pulks, we would go for an hour and then stop for a comfort break of 5 mins to adjust clothing (you may be too hot or too cold).  After that and for the rest of the day until we pitched up again for the night we pulled for 1hr and 15 mins then had a 10 min break and then swapped the pulk with your partner, carried the rucksack for the next 1hr and 15mins, then swapping back and so forth.... We were probably expending around 4000 calories a day, so we needed our energy.  I actually put weight on (you're supposed to lose it), and I'm sticking to the story that it was all muscle! The main thing you have to do when you're on cooking duty is light the stove and melt snow to make water.  At breakfast the cooks got up at 6, cleared a corner in the main tent and set up the stove.  On the stove you had one ring for boiling the water and the other (less powerful) for melting snow.  It was a fine art working with the stove and getting the fastest melting and boiling technique.  And I enjoy simple tasks like this.We would do a round of brews for everyone.  Tea or watery hot chocolate and then add water to everyone's muesli type expedition breakfast.  Then it was another round of brews and then time to fill everyone's flasks (two each) with boiling hot water.  One flask to drink throughout the day and one to save for the dinner melting process, as you need water to start this off.  All in all breakfast normally took us between 2.5 to 3 hours as a job, but it was a large group to feed.  For dinner much of the same process, brews before and after, a main meal and also a pudding and then filling the flasks.  So dinner took slightly longer.  Everyone looked forward to their brews and dinner and I remember seeing the sadness in Matt's eyes when Janey and I handed him his dinner that hadn't been hydrated properly.  It haunts me :) and I still feel bad :) That's how important it is. Mike and I had endless discussions about food, all types of food and what we were craving from one minute to the next.  Who would've thought you can crave chips and gravy in the Arctic? :)... We're not sure what route we're taking yet, as we need to think about a number of things which include:  Safety, expedition logistics, length of time away from home, costs, team capabilities and skills base, chance of success and lastly our individual preferences and goals. So bearing all this in mind (quite a lot really :) we will arrive at our preferred route and expedition!I'll keep you posted!... (About time I hear some of you say?)  Still... best to get these things right eh? :)The start point will be over 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle and our journey will link the two highest communities in the Canadian Arctic - Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island and Grise Fjord on the South West of Ellesmere Island.  In Inuktitut (the traditional language spoken across parts of the the Canadian Arctic) Resolute Bay is called Qausuittuq, meaning 'the place with no dawn' and Grise Fjord is called Aujuittuq, meaning 'the place that never thaws', which sounds pretty other worldly I think you'll agree. We will travel over 300 miles on skis and manhaul all our equipment in sleds.  If it sounds like hard work... well, it's because it will be! :)Mark's just returned from Grise Fiord actually, and he told me  our route goes through an area called Polar Bear Pass (a route the bears migrate through twice each year) read about it here: http://www.mb.ec.gc.ca/nature/whp/nwa/polar/df04s01.en.htmlSome guys I know had a bear put it's paw through their tent last year... which was great for showing off their sewing skills afterwards, but slightly too close for comfort eh?  :)... Whilst Rebecca is on expedition her artist blog will be exhibited in BBC Radio Lancashire (Blackburn) and Cornerhouse (Manchester) and when she returns she will develop a body of artwork for a solo exhibition. Last year Rebecca was funded £5000 by Arts Council England to undertake three-weeks expedition training in the Scandinavian Arctic and Rebecca tested out different ways to communicate her experiences to her audiences. She wrote a blog which you can read here, exhibited creative documentation from her training in CUBE, Manchester, spoke on BBC Radio Manchester and gave artist talks to young people and the general public.  Rebecca has since developed plans for her Canadian Arctic expedition and is also organising creative educational projects with a secondary school in collaboration with Manchester Museum and Creative Partnerships Lancashire and Creative BA and MA students at Manchester Metropolitan University.Rebecca launched Th’Arctic in August 2008 with the assistance of The University of Salford’s Press and PR Department and had articles in The Lancashire Evening Telegraph, The South Manchester Reporter and The Manchester Evening News. Rebecca also spoke on BBC Radio Lancashire, BBC Radio Manchester, Salford City Radio and Manchester News Online. Rebecca is seeking both cash and in-kind business sponsorship and Arts Council England funding for Th’Arctic.  For more information please email Rebecca on reb.mcknight@gmail.com or call 01254 277 190. ... Anyway, Max approached me about getting some journalism work experience and I have set him to work on Th'Arctic Social for the summer.  Max has been accompanying me to my press interviews to gain experience and to ask the journalists or radio presenters questions about working in the media. So far Max has accompanied me to a newspaper interview with John Anson the Assistant Features Editor for Lancashire Evening Telegraph and also to a show at BBC Radio Lancashire when I was interviewed on Ladies at Lunch earlier this week.  (I'm doing a round of interviews to get the word out that I'm looking for business sponsors)! Both experiences were great for both Max and I and as I've told him, it's a two-way thing...  I get to share part of my journey with him and he gains work experience.  Max gets to research things that interest him in relation to the Arctic and publish them on Th'Arctic Social and I get an enthusiastic young person to educate me and other people! The best thing though is something I found out on the way to our first interview,., and that is Max's favourite musician is Jimi Hendrix and Jimi is my ultimate favourite musician! So we're off to a good start! Max has written an introduction to himself and two articles about his experiences at Lancashire Evening News and BBC Radio Lancs. So I'll get those posted up next.  Thanks for reading.   ... I’m Maximilian, but you can call me Max ;-) Male/18. I’m currently waiting to start University in September, which I’m really looking forward to. I like: Writing: When I find the time I write my own poetry, short stories and now articles for the Th’Arctic Social which will be launched later this year. Music:  The late great JIMI HENDRIX... Northern Soul, Blues, Folk, etc.  (I love all the classics).   At the moment though, I’m listening to a lot of Amy Winehouse, MGMT, Niche and grime. Film: You can’t go wrong with a bit of Brando.  Stanley Kubrick, Jean Luc Goddard, Sam Peckinpah, (now these guys could direct). I have a really big passion for journalism; it’s what I want to do.  Photojournalism for me is also really interesting; I can now combine my love of writing with my new interest in photography working as a journalist for Th’Arctic Social. You now know that writing is my main priority at the moment.  So, writing articles for Rebecca's project is really helpful in allowing me to gain experience for what I want to do in the future. Well that’s my story up to now. Thanks for reading. Max... (Editors note – Max, you are embarrassing me lol :)Blackburn, Manchester and Liverpool are where her exhibitions will be situated, she explained how important it is to spread the aims of Th’Arctic on a wide scale and hopefully inspire more young people and creatives to get involved.  Rebecca will in fact be visiting schools and giving talks and workshops to really get the young people on board.  To quote Rebecca “I really want to get more young creatives like Max involved”.  With my name being mentioned, a large smile beamed like the sun outside, across my face.By this time Sally and Carole were completely hooked on Rebecca’s ideas, especially loving the witty and catchy play on words “Th’Arctic".  They just couldn’t stop themselves from saying, in funny northern accents “Th’Arctic” whenever there was a music interval. As the interview drew to a close, Rebecca then explained that she is looking for companies to sponsor her project and that she is also raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support from friends and family via her Th’Arctic “Just Giving Page” at www.justgiving.com/tharcticSo, once again, a very successful interview by Rebecca which I believe will have encouraged many people to want to get involved with the ever growing organic experiment “Th’Arctic”. Maximilian Igbon - Th'Arctic Social Contributor... And that is The Fitness Works. - David Brownley's Personal Training business, which is based in Salford.I met David at a business networking meeting.  He was sat next to me and when we were going round the table introducing ourselves, David revealed that he'd spent 12 years in the army and had trained soldiers in Arctic survival and combat in Norway!I suddenly found myself beaming directly at Dave (much to his bemusement:) And, afterwards I filled him in on Th'Arctic.  Dave was sold and agreed to sponsor the project by training me twice a week in the run up to my expedition. In addition to increasing my fitness, Dave is also looking at my nutrition, training me to use a rifle (polar bear safety), working on my navigation and putting me through some lovely Arctic survival exercises :)I did my fitness assessment last week in Dave's new Salford Crescent gym and did a number of exercises.  I nearly fell off the treadmill when I was running at 11 miles an hour (Dave warned me afterwards,., ‘don’t look down! ☺ and then he put my legs out of action for a few days with some gruelling squat exercises! (But if I’m being honest, I caned my legs myself with a fell run and cycling the days before, so it wasn’t Dave’s fault).Dave commented: 'Rebecca's fitness is above average for aerobic capacity, which is fantastic, but the areas we are going to work on most for what she needs is Muscle endurance mainly in the legs, but it is just as important elsewhere, and also Muscle strength as this will make it easier to pull a sled and not get fatigued as quickly... I look forward to putting Rebecca through her paces!' I returned for my second session this Tuesday and we did weights to strengthen my shoulders and arms, press ups, then sit ups with a weighted ball, (which I had to press out 5 times every time I came up), and then loads of crazy jumping exercises. They required coordination, but also counting (for the reps); Dave has quickly realised that doing freaky star jumps and counting at the same time does not come easy for me, so now Dave counts :) Also, I tried to do a one armed press up by copying Dave’s technique… I think this was slightly ambitious, as I ended up collapsed on the floor ☺ Game on for session 3 ☺For more info about Dave and The Fitness Works see www.thefitnessworksonline.com ... I like working as a team, but I also like the silent bits during the day when you're pulling your pulk, because for a creative person it’s great; you can get lost in your thoughts and take in your surroundings.”   For Rebecca it’s the psychological side which poses the biggest challenge, not the physical side.  This being because it’s very easy for morale to drop, but “It’s very important to stay positive, so as to keep people’s sprits high” said Rebecca.   The harsh Arctic climate however, may have already caused psychological problems for Rebecca though, as she found out on her Arctic training...  “I started dreaming about famous ginger haired men!” explained Rebecca.  Mick Hucknall and Chris Evans were the two who occupied her dreams.  “I dreamt I met Mick in a bar for a few drinks and then I dreamt I was going down Manchester’s Oxford Road in a horse drawn carriage with Chris Evans.” Said Rebecca “I was discussing how great my thermal socks were… He took a fibre sample from them and took it away to analyse”!  So, there you have it.   Some pretty random and actually rather strange dreaming going on in her Scandinavian Arctic expedition, but apart from that, once again, a very successful interview by Rebecca. The interview with Tom Rodgers should be up and ready to be read by you all very soon.Maximilian Igbon - Th'Arctic Social Contributor... In Inuktitut (the language spoken in the Canadian Arctic) the narwhal is named qilalugaq, meaning  "the one that points to the sky"In Inuit legend, the narwhal was created when a woman holding onto a harpoon had been pulled into the ocean and twisted around the harpoon. The submerged woman was wrapped around a beluga whale on the other end of the harpoon. Some medival Europeans believed narwhal tusks to be the horns from the legendary unicorn.  As these "horns" were considered to have magic powers, Vikings and other northern traders were able to sell them for many times their weight in gold.  The tusks were used to make cups that were thought to negate any poison that may have been slipped into the drink. During the 16th century,Queen Elizabeth received a carved and bejeweled narwhal tusk for £10,000—the cost of a castle (approximately £1.5—2.5 Million today!)   ... Obviously being fitter helps you enjoy the experience loads more, because it's not so much of a struggle when you're climbing up mountains with a heavy sack on and you don't get as mentally tired so you have more energy for chatting and having a laugh.  I'll write an account of what we did on the team training next so you can get an idea of what we did.  I have some phone photos too.    ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 [27 November 2008] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/384976 INDIGENOUS PEOPLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN CLIMATE CHANGE TALKSUN climate change talks are excluding communities who will suffer the most from changing weather patterns, according to a report released today. The report, released by Minority Rights Group International (MRG), says that the voice of indigenous and minority communities must be formally recognised in the climate change talks that begin in Poznan, Poland, on December 1.MRG said that "time is running out" for indigenous communities to get countries to acknowledge that they should be included in the Copenhagen negotiations in 2009 when a new climate deal is expected to be agreed.Unlike the international Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the multilateral environmental treaty signed by 192 states, does not mention the impact of climate change on indigenous or minority communities.Indigenous people around the world are often at the frontline of climate change, living in ecologically sensitive areas and reliant on natural resource for survival. Campaigners say that the impact of climate change already threatens many of these communities.Arctic Inuit people have seen their land disappear as the polar ice caps melt, farmers in East Africa are facing severe food shortages due to persistent drought, and Miskito tribes in Nicaragua are seeing their livelihoods threatened by unseasonal flooding.READ THE FULL ARTICLE HEREhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/nov/20/...... He's been training for his forthcoming solo expedition on Baffin Island (Canadian Arctic) with world leading Polar Instructor, Matty McNair and explorer American, Eric Larsen. Antony will be setting off on his 2-week solo expedition on Monday and apparently there is a polar bear in the vicinity. Antony however is not allowed to take a rifle, so in his words, he is taking his shovel and bear spray and hoping he won't have to use them! British based Italian woman, Christina Franco embarked upon her solo unsupported North Pole trip, with one resupply, but had to call it a day when her stove failed to work. Without her stove she had no way of heating her tent at night, nor making any food! She's still going to go to the North Pole, but from a Russain Base and she will make another attempt next year! British explorer Pen Hadow (first man, solo unsupported to the North Pole) has set off on his latest Arctic expedition (The Catlin Arctic Survey ) which can be followed on Google Earth. Producer Armand Dijcks and polar adventurer Philip de Roo collaborated in the production of a video clips series covering, among other experiences, "the zen of skiing on Greenland's icecap, the fear felt during a polar storm, and the thrill of dog sledding." I have uploaded a couple of BBC documentaries on the Arctic. One on polar bears and brown bears and the other on the Great Salmon rush in Alaska; andThe Scott Polar Research Institute in the University of Cambridge launched a brand new website where you can see loads of photographs illustrating polar exploration from the nineteenth century onwards.
