This in turn led to focusing on the group idea, forming a membership for developing projects and new ideas. This was a very useful brainstorming time and Veronica has made substantial links with Celtica, The Port Celtic Festival 2008, Port Adelaide and Country Arts SA.   Celtica, organised by Suzanne Laslett has previously not had a visual art element and participation by Le Chéile Cystyllt would be the first presentation with other artists. It would take place in various centres (up to eight) around/close to the festival site in Port Adelaide during December 2008. Country Arts SA (contact Rob Johnston) is a substantial touring exhibition programme taking visual art to regional and remote areas of South Australia. Exhibitions tour for over 18 months. There would be a requirement for artists to attend this event throughout its duration and there is some funding for this. At the time of writing Le Chéile Cystyllt has been provisionally selected for this programme so this is tremendous news. Thanks to Veronica for making very good progress in developing the project here. ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 [6 October 2008] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128  PART TWO Summary of visit 7th September  On Saturday over coffee Pamela, Eileen, Veronica and Andrew discussed the project to date and the way forward. It was generally felt that the conclusion of the project might involve making a consolidated set of prints around the themes and from work produced, rather than continuing with the exchange process but that this was by no means proscriptive. Pamela talked of ‘finishing the project’ and both Pamela and Eileen were conscious of the Graphic Studio Dublin exhibition that might require editioned prints.  Everyone was positive for the Celtica festival that Veronica outlined. We also discussed the idea of a residency in the west of Ireland following previous discussions with Monica de Bath and suggestions on location by Margaret Becker. This could be a way of furthering the project in a different way, by creating a residency or meeting for a week when members could meet, discuss ideas and make work. Cill Rialaig, Kerry was considered to be very good but there could also be possible venues for this in Wales. Holyhead was discussed as Andrew had already talked with Ucheldre Arts Centre for possibly taking the Le Chéile Cystyllt exhibition. A possible time for this was discussed, either February when the Cill Rialaig would probably be more likely to be available or ideally in spring, April/May when the weather is better. In addition the exhibition in Rhyl Library for January 2010 was outlined as another confirmed venue for the exchange exhibition. New work could be available for this exhibition. The Graphic Studio Dublin exhibition is scheduled for November 2009.We left after a very positive meeting with Pamela and Eileen and headed toward Clane to meet with Monica de Bath. We visited Monica ‘s studio close to the Bog, vibrant colour in the studio and at various points on the industrial site that houses Monica’s studio, painted on metal sheets some from the engines that used to collect peat now defunct, scrapped and superseded by tractors. Veronica again discussed the outlined proposals and Monica was very positive about the developments in Australia. We discussed new members taking part in the project. Monica felt the Cill Rialaig, Kerry for a residency was a very good location, perhaps the location may be difficult because of the popularity of the venue and that we should consider alternatives as well. We left at 5.30pm to head for Dún Laoghaire for the ferry to Holyhead.  Conclusion   Very positive responses to further manifestations in Celtica, Country Arts SA, Rhyl Library, Graphic Studio Dublin and Cill Rialaig, Kerry with members keen to further collaboration in new forms. Also the number of prints per person has been reduced. The Graphic Studio Board wish to view jpegs of finished prints mid-January.  We suggest that each artist submits two prints influenced by the collaboration, as well as two prints from each collaborating pair of artists.  If we have about 14 artists altogether that would be 28 individual prints and in theory 14 'collaborative' prints. That would be a total of 42 prints. This will allow room for those with and without partners to participate. We can fine-tune later and also change the guidelines for other exhibitions,Pamela ... Some of these problems could have been ameliorated by having a dedicated site to which images could be uploaded. This would have  advantages over the sending of individual e-mails containing images in that the images would be in one place selectors wouldn't have to go through a number of e-mails containing images of varying format and sizes, the selection process would also be more transparent. The site could also be used by people working collaboratively on an image or images. The a-n site could be used for both these process there are limitations created by the limited size of the images on this site and it lacks a facility to download images for others to work on but I'm not sure that the limitations are such that we need to set up an alternative. Judging by the amount of traffic on the Le Cheile a-n blog site not many of the members are comfortable or are aware of the advantages of using the technology. My preference is to continue with exploring the limits of the a-n blog. It's probably more a case of encouraging others to use it rather than setting up something new.don ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 [13 May 2009] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 By Pamela de Brí, Irish co-coordinator This project is a cross-cultural project involving two Celtic countries with the same roots and similar traditions and using verbal three languages: Irish, Welsh and English. "Le Chéile" project recognises the importance of sharing and accepting cultural diversity between the two countries while dealing with the limitations of verbal communication. The spoken word can often lead to misinterpretations, whereas visual language crosses these boundaries. What makes this collaboration especially different is the fact that the artists are not working in the same physical space and therefore the work is produced sequentially. There is no face-to-face communication, no interruptions of dialogue, no discussion, and no immediate response. The collaborating artist responds to the work in front of him/her. The work develops at a distance, slowly. Therefore, because of this delayed response, the project is a long term one which is now entering its next phase. New participants have come on board in Ireland, in Wales and now in Australia. This next phase, while encouraging continued collaborations between established partners, consists of opening up the project to elicit response to any image by any of the artists, thus encouraging visual dialogue between any two, three or group of participants. The logistics of the day's travelling meant we didn't get there until most of the exhibitors had shut up shop, but by great good fortune the first tent we came to was the Art & Craft tent, and the first person we met therein was Diana Williams, one of the Le Chéile artists.  She had had such a successful week that she had almost completely lost her voice.  Nearby, some of Steffan's work was still in the Cornel Celf a Chrefft. http://www.achrefft.co.uk/amdanom_ni_about_us.html We managed to get into the Art & Craft Pavilion (diolch yn fawr iawn, Robyn Tomos) where - another piece of luck - I was able to introduce Pamela to Sean Harris, collagraph printmaker & animator extraordinaire.  There isn't enough room in this slot to give a critique of the work in the Pavilion: suffice it to say that it was very diverse in subject and execution, and I agree with Steffan that "Hadau" was the most atmospheric piece, even though we missed the performance and just saw the installation. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwest/sites/eistedd... Finally we attended the closing concert in the main Pavilion, along with 3,000 other happy Eisteddfod visitors.  The atmosphere in the Pavilion is always terrific, and the performers (Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn - a youth music theatre) put on a great show. Pamela - an Irish speaker - found it exciting and intriguing to be surrounded by people of all ages speaking Welsh. This morning Ian Williams, another member of the group, came over for coffee before Pamela went to take the ferry home.  So, more chat and exchange of ideas and stories. Ian & Pamela recounted the tale of Rhys and Meinir, which was new to me.  Meinir is trapped in an oak tree on her wedding day, Rhys and his faithful dog search for her in vain, and then both expire when a storm splits the oak and reveals her body. The setting of the legend is Nant Gwtheyrn, where the language centre is now.  Layers of meaning within the story, within the landscape. Ideal stuff for printmaking.   AC... Thinking aloud, she wondered whether we could have some music in the background.     This has set me thinking, because Pamela was trying to record the voices of the crowd at the Eisteddfod on her camera.  I didn't realise that my digital camera had a microphone, or I could have had a go myself.  Perhaps we could have a sound piece of speech in the languages spoken by participants?  (I would need to find someone with proper recording equipment and mixing facilities - I have  a couple of ideas there - will pursue this, I think.) It turned out to be a really fine day after what feels like weeks of non-stop rain, and I walked along the beach with a friend.  Hard going, as it's coarse shingle with the odd dead sheep, but the outgoing tide revealed a gently shelving sandy area.  We walked back along the Llyn Coastal path, which involved a stiff climb up the cliff and a gentle walk back through wind-stunted oak and hazel woodland.    Remnants of Y Nant's industrial past are everywhere, stone and iron like totem poles defying the elements.  There are lots of things here to inspire the printmaker, so I hope we'll have a really useful few days. Actually, since the accommodation is booked and the food is provided on site, providing some of us can get there with a sketchbook and a couple of pencils apiece we can have a good time whatever happens.  After all, you can make interesting drawings in torrential rain and high winds even when the ink runs and the paper half blows away.  And then escape indoors and do some printing. So, let's hope for calm seas and a good and productive three days' work. Alison.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 [25 October 2009] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 Le Chéile at Nant Gwrtheyrn, part one. Our three day stay at Y Nant has been a great success,  generating a huge amount of enthusiasm and a remarkable amount of work.  We created a working print studio from scratch, relying entirely upon the generosity and goodwill of participants - and the tolerance of the Centre Director and his staff.  We were blessed with good weather, despite a miserable forecast, and although it rained heavily on occasion we were able to enjoy our surroundings.  Drawing, painting, printmaking, talking (and eating and drinking!); we immersed ourselves in our work and generated a real buzz of collaboration. "The creative concentration was palpable in the studio (heritage centre at Nant Gwrtheyrn) with everyone collectively working and finding ways through the collaboration to new areas. There was plenty of discussion and talking ideas, very much part of collaboration. Combined with so much work going on, prints, drawings and books the process of working on a plate, then drawing, then paint makes for fluid output. Such concentration!" Andrew Smith http://picasaweb.google.com/andrewsmithstudio/Nant... "The remoteness and spectacular nature of the environment supported and set the scene for our collaborative work. Creatives usually work in isolation, if they do work together it's with a common goal in mind. The goals appeared to emerge from the conversations we had and the work we started to produce, initially as individuals and later as collaborators. The collaborations arose out of our responses to each others work. The individual pieces of work determined the agenda and our direction as a group. On the final evening a piece of work emerged that was from the whole group." Don Braisby  http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/502449 "I thoroughly enjoyed the two days I spent there- an ideal environment for total immersion in creative printmaking without any outside distractions (not even a mobile signal!). The group got on very well and the conversation and convivial atmosphere were as important inmaking it a success as the printmaking itself." Ian Williamshttp://www.ian-williams.co.uk/ A.C.  ... As well as the exhilarating creative atmosphere we experienced at Nant Gwrtheyrn, one of the best things (I thought) was the saline sulphate etch, kindly provided by Don B.  With a little ingenuity, the etching bath was established in the bracken outside the Heritage Centre, and prints were hung to dry on pegs in the glass-fronted area overlooking the sea. We were able to work into and onto each other's aluminium plates, combining images and ideas; etching and re-etching; printing and working into the resulting images.  Motifs combined and multiplied to generate a dizzying quantity of experimental prints reflecting the themes of Le Chéile enhanced by the environment at Nant Gwrtheyrn: land, language, memory, history, cohesion, separation. As part of the creative process, we also undertook some collaborative drawings; both A1 size (see right), and on a small scale as entries for the Vault Gallery's forthcoming exhibition And, on the first night, a "round robin"  drawing session; passing drawings round the group for each artist to contribute their own marks to each drawing. http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lecheile09/NantGwrth... Well, I thought I had better send an update on what is happening here. We have had three exhibitions in Elliston, Jamestown and Bordertown. We are getting really good reviews and four more galleries have approached Countryarts to have it there. Rob is currently working out dates and seeing whether it can fit in between other exhibitions, or be tacked on to the end. I will let you know. Sadly Roxby Downs - where it is meant to be now - postponed it. They got in a new coordinator who agreed to another exhibition without realising he was committed to ours and it was too late to organise another venue by the time the mistake was realised. But Rob is going to try to sort out another date with them also. Celtica is going full steam ahead with the program getting bigger by the day. The opening for Le Chéile is the 27 November and we have booked a band "Blind Mary" (celtic jigs etc) for the opening. Rob is organising the head of the UniSA print department to open it. There will also be exhibitions in the cafés and pubs as last year and also three other galleries are now having shows. One is a new gallery - Zelim which will have its opening on the 2/12 and for entertainment is having a guy playing bagpipes (Alison and Pam will be having work in that show). The next gallery is Gaff whose opening is on the 29 November. And lastly the Axis Gallery which is having its opening on the 9/12 and has a Pict dancing group doing a performance in a theatre which goes off from the gallery. This exhibition is works by Andrew Smith, Gareth Wyn Jones, Suzanne Laslett (Celtica organiser) and myself. Andrew Smith is coming out for all these festivities - and as the schedule gets fuller will then head back to Wales in total need of the long that nights you will be enjoying by then!  After a very unusual and cold winter it is finally warming up here - but we are not complaining as for the first time in six years are dams are full! - and so hopefully the weather will be great for the festival.  I have also been in touch with a contact of Steffan's in Perth, WA and we are looking at what might happen in the future, so we shall see where that might go.Pob hwyl pawb Veronica... I was able to visit the Riddoch Art Gallery in Mount Gambier with Rob Johnston and Katinka Gleim whilst installing another show Parallel at Mellicent Art Gallery, both towns located toward the Victoria Border in the South East of the State. The Riddoch Art Gallery is run by Lucia Pichler, SA South East Director and Lucia gave a tour of the gallery and the Gooch collection of Aboriginal art from Utopia (aboriginal country near Alice Springs). The collection consists of 2D and 3D work by, mainly, living and recent contemporary aboriginal artists and is a rich and diverse collection. The Riddoch also has a national collection of contemporary art making a comprehensive selection of Australian art with artists such as Ian Abdullah and Ann Newmarch. The photograph features Lucia Pichler and myself in front of a large triptych by John Beard (painter born Wales 1945) one of the paintings in the collection. Le Chéile will be touring to the Riddoch when it reopens after rebuilding later 2010.   With the touring programme organised by Country Arts SA Le Chéile is reaching a wide audience as it travels throughout South Australia. The exposure in this substantial exhibition form adds to the central theme of the project, that of distant communication through printmaking; ideas flow between art work and exhibition viewer as individual and cultural connections are discovered and reinvented. The exhibition has been reviewed in Imprint, December 2009 edition.   There are plenty of visitors to Port Adelaide throughout the week and at weekends, particularly during festivals. The Celtica festival has attracted a large audience over this weekend (5 and 6th December). Organised by Suzanne Laslett it showcases performers with Celtic heritage and association, musicians on two stages, numerous stalls, Scotland focus, Welsh and Irish language classes, food stalls, traditional dancing, demonstrations of musical instruments and an impressive line up of bands including Rickety Bridge and Bric a Brac, the Melbourne based band with strong Brittany connections. The visual art element of Celtica was comandingly inaugurated by bagpipes leading all from the Gaff gallery to the . The exhibitions include Wales and Ireland Le Chéile participants.   Thanks must go to Veronica Calarco for instigating the Australian participation in Le Chéile and putting together the proposal for exhibition; Rob Johnston and Katinka Gleim for selecting and organising the touring exhibition and Suzanne Laslett for organising the Celtica festival with visual art element (coordinated again by Veronica) creating a strong Wales/Ireland art presence in Port Adelaide at the moment.   There are numerous further adventures to report from my three week visit to Australia so please see more at http://energystations.blogspot.com/ to be loaded over the coming days.   Andrew Smith 6th (Adelaide) and 11th December (Sydney) 2009... It is the premier art space in Port Adelaide, a short drive from the city. The streets of Port Adelaide are wide and spacious leading to the harbour and waterfront where the New Land Gallery is located.   The gallery has a high ceiling with good lighting, a foyer space with the exhibition title Le Chéile written high up as visitors enter the building and print works leading into the main space. 123 works are showing by 17 participants from the start of the project and includes recent new participants. The selection process by Veronica Calarco, Rob Johnson (Visual Arts Manager, Country Arts SA) and Katinka Gleim (Visual Arts Officer) has really worked in creating a consolidated exhibition out of the many the different collaborations, ideas and processes. Additional work by each artist is presented in a highly visible print browser. At the time of writing there are two sales from the exhibition (Steffan and Veronica). The exhibition’s coherency is helped by the combination of several works in large frames; often, but not always collaborative partners are framed together creating a substantial wall presence. Other works, mostly the larger prints are also in individual frames. The artists books and folios are displayed clearly in cases, with one sketchbook accessible to touch. The private view was well attended. Vicky Reynolds, Head of Printmaking at TAFE School of Arts opened the show talking about process and printmaking with a musical performance by Irish band Blind Mary. As we get to know each other better I think that we are becoming more adventurous in the collaboration, appropriating each others images and plates. There has been a slow build up of trust between the artists and a genuine exchange of ideas and work. The group structured the residency very well with initially an exchange of ideas and a presentation of each artist's work. This was followed by several 'show and tell' sessions where we shared our concepts, drawings, progress in platemaking and ultimately first proofs. There was a free exchange of information on techniques and processes as well as an exchange of proofs and plates. While most of us were quite familiar with each other after Nant Gwrtheyrn, it was a great opportunity to get to work with and to know Veronica better. If we can manage to maintain the momentum we may well be into the most interesting stage of the project to date.   ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 [13 April 2011] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 Field Trip to Oriel Mon (Anglesey) Tara, Linda and Alison visited Oriel Mon to get a feel of the main gallery.  This was a good move, as we had become a bit intimidated by the idea of the big space:  it certainly is big, but it's not intimidating.  At a guess, it's probably about 50% larger than the gallery space at Rhyl Arts Centre.  We can fill it.... It was very helpful to meet Nicola Gibson, who is no longer just a voice on the phone, or a signature to an email.  She was reassuring, and full of good ideas. We will have cabinets for 3D work and artists' books, and there's space to hang 3D stuff away from the walls, subject to negotiation. Our exhibition (24th. September to November 6th.) coincides with the Big Draw, so it seems like a good idea to run a Big Print/Small Print event in the gallery at the same time.  This would be an excellent chance to work with professional printmakers and to bring printmaking to the wider public.  A lot of preparation to do:  what medium/media to use? where to source l a r g e pieces of paper? who will sponsor us?  etc. etc. etc.   AC      ... We have been preparing for our exhibition at Urban Retreat in Dublin. Riding on the wave of interest generated by the Queen's visit to Ireland, and a serendipitous purchase of one of Veronica Calarco's prints by himself, the British Ambassador has agreed to open the exhibition. The show continues until August 12th. http://urbanretreatgallery.blogspot.com... It will then re-open in September for a further two weeks.  Participating artists: Veronica Calarco, Linda Davies, Sylvia Hemmingway, Pamela de Brí, Margaret Becker, Don Braisby, Eileen Keane, Alison Craig, Diana Williams, Deirdre Shanley, Bethan Hodgson and Rebecca Homfray.... This was part of the Big Draw project. After a slow start it was a great success with 13 children in the morning and 12 in the afternoon. We used the portable press from The Yale Printcentre which they loved. They drew from the work in the gallery and made a print based on that drawing.   Children's gallery at https://picasaweb.google.com/stiwdiopenrallt/BigDr...  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 [9 February 2012] http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/432128 All good things must come to an end, and le Chéile is one such.  It has far outlived its' intended lifespan, and has evolved to accommodate new members and new ideas.  There have been high profile exhibitions in Eire and in Wales, and the project has been featured in the Gaelic- and Welsh-speaking media. Participants in le Chéile have forged professional and personal friendships, and have learned much about printmaking and about each others' cultural heritage. The "list of credits" is long, but without Steffan Jones-Hughes (previously of the Regional Print Centre, Wrexham) and Margaret Becker of Leinster Printmaking Studio, le Chéile would never have happened.  Lucina Russell, Arts Officer, County Kildare facilitated the initial contacts;  Monica de Báth co-ordinated the Irish side of the first phase of the project; Pamela de Brí took over from her and saw things through to their final conclusion.  Alison Craig assisted Steffan at the beginning and later took over the organisation of the Wales-based artists.  Veronica Calarco worked tirelessly in Australia with great results.  Geraldine O'Reilly (Eire) and Jim Creed (Wales) acted as curators at various times. (And, of course, thanks to all our sponsors, and apologies to anyone I've missed) A changing cast of artists took part - "without whom" etc....... - more about them on http://lecheileprintproject.blogspot.com and the Print Studios on: http://www.yale-wrexham.ac.uk/facilities/regional-... http://www.leinsterprintstudio.com/   Thanks very much to everyone for so much hard work.
