Thanks Sophie. I have returned the follow and added your coded user name to the outcome. The rules I have set are such that the two numbers are kept in-balance. Following and unfollowing are returned. I did like 555, but it was only there for a few hours today and I like the number growing much more anyway..!

A TOURING EXHIBITION

Twitter User Names - Coded and Transcribed (TUNCaT) is one of two works I have in Jane Boyer's touring exhibition that is This 'Me' of Mine (TMoM).

The original intention was to show this real-world outcome as one of the works.

However, this work will now not appear, being replaced with a new and updatable (between exhibitions) outcome.

Twitter User Names - Coded and Transcribed 2013

TUNCaT has been reworked to be up-datable between exhibitions.

As connections and interactions with @codedimages happen, the virtual work will grow on a daily basis and the real-world work will be updated for each new real-world exhibition.

Hi Rob & David, I'd like to jump in here and add a comment about the significance of David's Twitter concept - at least the significance I see in it. The thing that fascinated me from the very start of his enquiry with Twitter was the coding of an already coded identity. Reducing a user name, which is a chosen identity, to dots and dashes is a reduction of our identities to complete abstraction and dehumanisation, much like being reduced to a statistical 'number'. Only those versed in reading the dots and dashes can understand what is written there. But the interesting twist in this for me is our complicity in the dehumanisation - we willingly now give ourselves coded names and identities, so it hardly matters any more if we are further abstracted into a coded reality not of our making and only accessible to a very few who can read the code............ And there is another interesting thing happening in the choice of coding in the dots and dashes - I won't name the code David has used but I'm sure many will know immediately what it is - there is a comparison between eras, war-era and communication age. Identity and our views of identity are changing, David's linking of the two codes carries social and historical significance in this juxtaposition.

no problem at all rob. ... 'coded' as the work codes twitter user names. ... 'transcribed' as here the virtual work has been put into printed form. ... 'paper, ink, binding comb' is a list of materials. note 'ink, binding comb' and not 'ink binding comb. ... here the 'binding comb's are used to connect the sheets of paper.

I'm so sorry David # single malt. and I'm loosing it slightly!!!!!! But 'coded and transcribed', office paper, ink binding comb' ? Now thats an interesting hook! Can you enlighten me more?. Particularly the the bit about 'ink binding comb'? Sorry, technical but some how relevant to a way in to this.

BEYOND TMoM

While TUNCaT has a life within TMoM, my twitter work continues to evolve in other ways.

A New Tool

A digital projector has been added to my tool set. A small highly portable LED projecter, and Acer K130. Only 150 lumen, but very useful in a semi-dark room or even in normal daylight in my north facing studio space.

As an early experiment I have proected twitter stream mode 4 onto twitter user names - coded and transcribed. There is a brief video of this below. It is only a rough sketch to check the basic idea. More research is required before caiming there is a new outcome.

AN OBSERVATION

It is interesting to watch followers come and go @codedimages.

Follow and get followed back.

Unfollow and get unfollowed back.

Both transactions are recorded in the virtual and physical output.

Preparation

Today was spent preparing and packing TUNCaT for TMoM. The pre APT exhibition print was made, freezing the state of TUNCaT for the duration of the APT Deptford exhibition.

The virtual work TUNC will continue to be updated on at least a daily basis. The next physical print will be made between exhibitons in readiness for the second stage of the TMoM tour at Strange Cargo in Folkstone.

Packaging

Sending a delicate work through the parcel post requires a bit of planning and in this case a custom frame to support the work.

A 'custom frame' sounds so grand when it is a simple mount board sandwich designed to clamp the work so it cannot be flayed against the sides of the box during transit. It appears to do the job, in testing at least.

When the work arrives safe at the gallery I will know for sure, or be rushing about trying to get another print there by some other means. D day is 12th March, we will know then and not before.

Frozen
