F O R M A T

By: David Riley

An occasional exploration of facilities and limits within the context of an a-n blog.

An a-n choice blog, read about it here.

# 48 [5 May 2013]

With the new a-n web promised to arrive very soon, this FORMAT installation will soon be irrevocably changed.

With that in mind, (maybe) now is the time to review and reflect on the a-n we have enjoyed over recent years.

Take the time to smile about all the little idiosyncratic features we have grown used to.

Take the time to prepare ourselves for all the unfamiliar (possibly idiosyncratic) features of the new system.

I will miss the system I have spent time studying and understanding.

I look forward, with anticipation, to researching and understanding the new system.

I look forward to the new creative opportunities that will present themselves.

There is also a visual illusion at play. ..... The blurring tricks our minds into thinking there must be movement and so we think we see movement. ..... So it depends on which 'pulsating' you are actually seeing. .... And then again, there is your computer graphics card. Lots of conversions going on there, so potential for noise and movement too.

Indeed. Should be titled 'not quite static'. But is any video truly static? In my experience the process of sequencing multiple frames into a movie and then compressing it down to some manageable size always introduces noise. ..... I made this using the same process as the kinetic videos below. Multiple frames are linked together using a standard cross-fade transition. Here the multiple frames are all copies of the same image. So it is the transition processing that is introducing the pulsating noise. ..... That is all about my video editor and youtube and how they interact. What I find interesting is the ability to subvert a-n by placing relatively large static images directly in a post via a static video. Beats all those little thumbnails, but is a pain to do!

am I right in thinking that this is just very gently pulsating in the middle - or is my computer broken?

As I write, today's order of presentation is: 5, 6, 3, 4, 7, 1, 2. Of course it may be entirely different for you?

posted on 2012-11-08 by David Riley

I placed the videos in the order suggested by the static image and yet, as I write, they are in this order on my screen: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2 or blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, monochrome, red, green. Illustrating the a-n blog's inability to keep multiple videos in a single post in a set order.

well that confused me!

As I write this comment, the order above is: 3, 4, 11, 12, 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13. Which is weird even for someone used to such systems. ..... Of course the site developers were not expecting anyone to push the video inclusion facilities this far. ..... I remain surprised there is no limit (as far as I can tell) on the number of embedded videos.

I renamed each video caption to make them easier to track should they change order again. As I write they are in perfect numerical sequence from the 1st ONE at the top to the 13th ONE at the bottom. Please leave a comment if you find them in any other order (listing the order too if you have the time and inclination).

Great minds... I tried that too and also failed.

posted on 2012-10-28 by David Riley

for a tricky challenge try to get them all playing at the same time and back up to the first one before it finishes..... (no I didn't manage it!!)

posted on 2012-10-28 by Sophie Cullinan

I originally posted these videos in order: 1, 11, 111, 1111, etc. ..... It seems however the displayed order can be somewhat different...

I could go on adding video to this one post. ..... But I won't.

More of a youtube tip than an a-n tip. ..... To hide the progress bar add &autohide=1 to the video URL.

A simple video taken straight from a simple digi-cam as 4:3 ratio standard definition .MOV file. ..... Even with such a standard file, between YouTube and the a-n web, a small top and bottom margin is formed around the movie (in Firefox on a PC at least). ..... I do enjoy the scratchy squidgy squeaky sound of marker pen on paper.

I never know where these enquiries might end up and 'Catherine wheel' had not entered my conscious mind - until now. ..... As I said below, it is time to move off in a different direction in order to stay focused on the general purpose of this particular enquiry. ..... The kintatic videos will no doubt continue elsewhere at some point in the future. They could even appear here again, if an appropriate connection occurs.

Now I'm getting dizzy! Catherine wheel?

Such things will be / have been covered, but not here. I have already indulged myself maybe a little more than the theme of this blog can justify. I have in mind to make a rotating version and may slip that in here at some point. Sound is another matter beyond the scope of F O R M A T, although the next few posts will have sound as a natural part of the expression. My earlier kinetatic videos have sound, see my concepts web for an example: http://www.concepts.codedimages.com/search/label/bar%20EP%20blues%20%28kinetatic%29 A messy URL but it should lead you to the right place for bar EP blues (kinetatic). Don't forget to turn the sound up.

love the combination of horizontal and vertical - ever thought about a diagonal one? Also - they really need some SOUND........(can this be done?)

The letter boxing appears to be consistent with this F O R M A T. So probably time to move on and look at other aspects of video in an a-n blog. Although more ambient kinetatic (#) videos may appear elsewhere. Indeed there are several from last year already in my youtube account. ..... (# kinetatic = on the margin between kinetic and static)

Ah yes what can I say except thank you. ..... One more to come in this F O R M A T to test the letter boxing (includes a little twist)...

this one is bit 'Rothko' crossed with a 'drinking straw' I think.

A technical note. This video was rendered as 1080p 16x9 or 1920x1080 HD. It can be viewed here at full resolution using the full-screen mode and selecting the maximum resolution.

I like that Sophie. Both the idea of combining videos and your words. ..... Indeed 'voluptuously extravagant'. ..... Which gives me another idea...

posted on 2012-10-16 by David Riley

I am enjoying playing a few of these simultaneously - can't quite find the words I to describe..... voluptuously extravagant perhaps?
