I mounted my projector on the top part of Ians space today using a stand made from MDF which I measured, constructed and painted black to match Ians wall. I am a little concerned that the image is very feint but i feel that you can still see the image clear enough and that this kind of works because it looks faded, in the same way memories become faded over time.

I also wired up the mac mini via a DVI to VGA cable and used cable hooks to make the wires look tidier on the wall. It sits on a small shelf which I painted white to match the wall and it is fairly high up so that people will not knock their head. The short throw projector is the perfect size for this space which I am very pleased about.

The video runs really well which I am happy with. It works really well next to the keys and I like that it is on a loop because to me this represents how after memory loss you tend to repeat yourself and forget what you have told who. I have called the piece “Forgetting to remember”.

I am excited to see everyones work finished and luckily Sian and Kayleigh are now all finished and i am excited that I am in a space with them becasue I feel that the pieces interact together really well. Sian uses text as do i with my projection, and Kayleigh’s is an installation as is the key piece. I think the pieces work really well together.

Since I painted my space I have mounted all of the keys onto the wall by drilling holes of the same size as the stem of each key into the wall and wedging them in. For the keys which this was not possibl, I used coctail sticks to put in the holes at the end of the key and insert the sticks into much smaller drilled holes in the wall. I used polyfilla at times to make sure the keys would stay in. I feel that the keys work really well next to Kayleigh’s photograph as her picture has alot of brown tones which tie up really well with the rusty keys.

I hung my vaccum formed frames on the small wall between Karen and my space. I called one “Retain” and the other “Recall” as they have retained the shape of the object formed and also recall memories as one of them has some personal found objects incoorporated.

I put the vitrine against the wall which is next to Ian’s space and filled it with empty frames. These i have called “Empty spaces where there once were faces”. This represents someone who has suffered with memory loss as they would not recognise the people in their photos anymore in a severe case. I also like the idea that the frames are desgined to hold a photo but without the photo they no longer have a purpose. The only problem with the space the vitrine is in, is that it is next to the swipe in point on the wall which is a little unsightly and distracting. Hopefully it is not too encroaching!

I painted my exhibition space walls including sprucing up areas I am not showing work but need to look smart so as not to detract from the art.

I have also made a small test piece for my keys. I used various drill bits to make holes in a piece of MDF to give myself a trial run before i start putting the keys into the wall in the exhibition space.

I was pleased with the outcome and am excited to see the keys in the actual wall, though a little nervous i may mess it up!

The keys represent how memory is sometimes trapped in the subconcious and needs something to trigger it for it to emerge. The keys are the trigger and therefore are there but lying dorment

As you can see I am next to Kay & Sian which i am pleased about as their work will interact well with mine, Sians being a text piece and Kay’s being an installation.

I decided to not use the video from the last post in the end as i felt that the MRI scan with text is much more powerful when played on a loop with just the words

“I don’t remember, I don’t recall, I dont remember anything at all”. The words are repeated over different MRI images and played on a loop.

This represents how memory is lost and in some cases the memories they create daily and wiped clan the next day. Therefore the repetition of the words is the brain erasing the memories and forgetting they have already said the words.

I have decided to call the piece “Don’t forget to remember” (2014).

This is a trial piece I made intended to show after my MRI scan with text.

I thought that it would be interesting to use three methods of recording information and write with each method (Typing, typewriting, handwriting), then screw up the page (or exit the screen!) and throw it away.

This is to represent how memory gets erased and then starts again for some people with memory issues.

I also wanted to begin writing over the initial writing to represent the way the brain builds up layers of memory.

The idea behind throwing some of the pages away is that the memory is being deleted and also hints at how the brain can only contain a certain amount of information.
