Taxidermy and the Soul

By: Janice Scull

In an existential world where God barely exists we tend to think of the soul as consciousness and believe that it cannot exist without our physical body. This has created a culture that is obsessed with youth and immortality and which attempts to cheat death at all cost. I believe it is from this that a recent emergence of art, which uses taxidermy has occurred.

Did Damien Hirst start it all? Our fascination with animals, stuffed and frozen in time, like a three dimensional movie still, has been running through our blood for hundreds of years. No Damien Hirst didn't start it all, he just made the most money out of it. And now, 20 years later, it seems everyone is doing it.

I, myself am drawn to this kind of art like a fly to a flame and I cant help but notice that its pretty bloody hot. Contemporary works from artist such as David Altmejd, Claire Morgan and Polly Morgan are but a few. In a world where dead things are "in" all I want to know is : Where can I get my hands on some?
