# 4 [8 February 2010]

Fidget reflects different aspects of our practices which we wanted to bring to the exhibition: A high energy level approach to exploration and experimentation.

We have both been influenced by Douglas Gordon's approach to video installation and subject matters. Lewis Holleran's main influences would include Ceal Floyer, Jason Dee and James Turrell.  Gary Bolam finds much of his influences come from the theory of intertextuality linked to Julia Kristeva, and also the quirky humour of David Shrigley.

Creative inspiration for Fidget started with a common interest in experimenting with the contrast between light and dark - in regards to humour, aesthetic, voids and immersion.  Along with a shared interest in installation artwork, we aimed to develop the aspects of our practices referenced in the exhibition name.

From working together on various projects we wanted to develop the relationship between our practices into a professional environment.  We both enjoy a clean minimalist aesthetic but with quite different outcomes - so felt it would lead to an interesting dynamic for an exhibition.

Fidget
Exhibition text

Fidget brings together the work of two recent graduates from Glasgow School of Art’s, Environmental Art course. The joint exhibition of new work in the Park gallery focuses on light and dark both literally and symbolically.

Gary Bolam’s work is often constructed using a lexicon of images, gestures and texts that he has built up over previous exhibitions and is reformed and recreated attentively yet intuitively to create new works. Notably, his work is the sum of all of the individual parts. Yet a scratch beneath the surface of his work reveals a content that asks questions of validity, the fragility of life and the viewer’s role in relation to the works. His work often creates an emotive response.

Lewis Holleran has shown work across Scotland - including two works in 2009's Edinburgh Arts Festival.  Primarily working with video installations, he is interested in atmospherics and lighting, he works with themes central to film noir, immersion and the sensory perception of contrast, rhythm and timing.

It is the first time that these two emerging artists will have shown work together and are expecting to take a reworked version of their show in the Park gallery through to exhibit in Glasgow around the same time as Glasgow International.
