for the bees is a participatory project led by Owen Griffiths and Fern Thomas which stems from a concern about the threat to bees. Working with a musician we will compose a song for community choirs to sing to bee hives in Swansea in a public gesture of concern about the fate of the bees. We will monitor the effect of the singing on the bees.
Owen Griffiths and Fern Thomas studied Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University where they first began working collaboratively in participatory and socially engaged practice. Their shared practice now focuses on environmental questions and issues of community.
Griffiths and Thomas also collaborate as part of groups 'Framework' and 'FAO'. They are based in Swansea.

For the Bees has been shortlisted for an amateur Scientist award on BBC Radio 4. The project has been shortlisted down from 1500 entries to 10.
Listen out for Owen discussing the project and the scientific explorations we will be doing on Radio 4’s Material World programme next week. (more info posted when we know more)
If selected to be amongst the final four projects we will be working with experts in the field of bees and will present our findings at the British Science Festival in September 2010.
