The BA (Hons) Photography programme is broad based and aims to support the development of creative independence using photography as a starting point. It takes its principles from the development of ideas, the recognition of individual creative innovation, an understanding of context and an interest in the dialogue between applied and fine art practice.
I am a visual artist, working with photography, video, print and and artist books. My work explores the external with the internal weather and conceptual ideas in fact and fiction. I am currently based in the North West of England, where I am originally from and I am In my final year of studying for a BA (Hons) in Photography at the Manchester School Of Art. www.caitlineirlyshoward.com

Yesterday I was told I have to write a proposal of my intentions for the degree show. I think I want to show a film and maybe a book...But will there be enough space for this? I need to find a dark corner somewhere I think...
Finished my 'Addressograph' book this week, a handmade book of prints from a found 'Addressograph' machine..

If you happen to be in Glasgow this weekend, pop in to Montgomery's Cafe ( 9 Radnor Street, Glasgow, G3 7UA ) and have a look at the zine showcase that is happening there. The preview is tomorrow night from half past 6...My little book for Dora Carrington entitled 'your c' is there along with lots of other lovely paper ephemera...
'your c' is a handmade book of photographs of the artist Dora Carrington, who lived in the 1920's and died tragically of a broken heart...

I showed my short video Panes in an installation at Uni the other day. The video is simply a long gaze out of a window.I don't think I will put the video up on my blog because it's not very interesting...I want to carry on using windows for a video piece....just with a touch of thrill and storyline...

These drawings are a selection of pen and ink reproductions of sketched diary entries. Some are from travels and some are just from everyday observations. I've just made a section for them on my new website www.caitlineirlyshoward.com

I'm trying not to be braindead this half term but it's very hard...New 8 mm film has arrived and Iv'e dusted off that old camera from the garage...Looking forward to making some films again...maybe with cats and boats, like this one...http://caitlinscountry.blogspot.com/2010/04/new-8-mm-film-has-arrived-and-ive.html
Im inspired by the diaristic films of Jonas Mekas and the idea of telling a story...

I am starting to realise my degree show work...
Continuing with investigating Manchester School of Art whilst researching other famous art institutions, namely, Black Mountain College, North Carolina. A school that was only open from 1933 to 1957, producing artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly who were taught by the likes of John Cage, Merce Cunningham and Josef Albers.
I think I'm drawn to the mythical quality of this school-it's brief history and anti-academic, progressive principles...
A magazine called '5 Photographers' was produced at the school by the photography students...There was one issue of 25 copies that is extremely rare and has seemingly slipped out of existence...
Inspired by Black Mountain College I have started to reproduce this magazine for my final project and this is the front cover...a slightly doctored version of a BMC review stolen from the library...

My friend wrote his dissertation around a similar subject to this. I like the 5 photographers cover, it actually looks very similar to something someone designed for the front cover of our degree show catalogue. I think this sounds like a really interesting project. As you say its the mythical quality of BMC, thats what is drawing me in here.
