Eagle & Feather present KIPPLE: VHS Art for the Digital Age

Kipple: A term borrowed from Phillip K Dick referring to the detritus of modern living that will one day overwhelm us.

“Kipple drives out nonkipple………No one can win against kipple, except temporarily and maybe in one spot………the entire universe is moving toward a final state of total, absolute kippleization.” Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Eagle & Feather: Julian Butler, aka Eagle, and Stephen Earl Rogers, aka Feather. Stephen is an artist working mainly as a painter. He is held in permanent collections in the UK and United States and has exhibited many times at the National Portrait Gallery. Julian is a film-maker and television producer. His work has appeared on BBC2, Channel 4, Sky, ITV and at the Edinburgh, London and Cannes film festivals.

Collaboratively, Eagle & Feather have been putting their own interpretation on the term kipple for a number of years. Through regular visits to charity shops, public libraries and jumble sales they have amassed a collection of absurdly peripheral and esoteric videotapes, selected for their distinct peculiarity.

Theirs is an attempt at alchemy, taking base material and transforming it, by various means – editing, manipulating, combining and reducing - into something that is imbued with new qualities - humour, drama, pathos and poetry. Turning kipple into non-kipple, at least temporarily.

# 5 [6 June 2010]

FAFF2010 submission deadline has gone and Fundada is now wading through the amazing quantity of post we have received from all over the world.

Fundada has taken to the quiet corners of bars and cafes across the Pennines for the reviewing process. 22 hours of videos have already been reviewed and we have already shortlisted some very exciting contemporary video art.

''agreeable beyond belief''

Not without technical hitch (isn't it always the case?)... windows vs mac causes problems yet again and the windows laptop takes a serious dislike to the mov files, even wafer thin mov http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlK62rjQWLk

Not to let that deter us, we have delegated the mov reviews to the mac, vowing to change to linux asap.

Fundada has also confirmed the launch programme line up and will be announcing shortly (very, very exciting).

A little taster of what's to come, here are some reviews of one of the acts:

'Wow, great stuff!' - Davy Rothbart, Found Magazine

'I love this so so so much' - Robert Popper, Writer; Peep Show, Look Around You, IT Crowd

'British people like to act superior to their colonial cousins, thanks to video wizards Eagle & Feather we know that thats just bollocks.' - EverythingisTerrible.com

'Holy shit, that's ridiculous.' - Joe Pickett, Found Film Festival

'Unnerving Fun' - Headpress Magazine

'Made me double up. Am I wrong?' - Matt Tiller, Comedian

'Like speed injected into the eyeballs.' - BlackLab

Film Festival Technician Required

Film Festival Technician Required (Unpaid Experience)

FAFF2010 requires a film show reel producer/technician to prepare film show reels of selected artists’ films with consistent title sequences for digital DVD projection. We require you to have your own software and hardware to produce high quality film show reels DVDs from a variety of digital formats under the direction of the festival curators. The film festival will run 14th – 20th August 2010 and availability to test-run the final show reels in advance of the launch is essential. Knowledge and skills of show reel production and AV equipment is essential but previous festival experience is not essential.

FAFF2010 is a zero budget film festival and is regrettable unable to offer financial reward for work but will provide enjoyable and creditable experience working as part of a creative team.

To apply, email: dice.fundada[at]yahoo.co.uk outlining your working knowledge of film, your software of choice, your availability in August and any other additional festival roles you may be interested in.

About Halifax Festival:

The Halifax Festival began life in 2007 as The July Project, a festival for the children and young people in Calderdale. The event was hugely successful with over 35,000 children turning up, tuning in and taking part. This video was recorded during the 2009 festival which will give you a flavour of what we have achieved and a feeling for what we would like to do:

The organising committee for The July Project met soon after the 2009 event and began to consider the route forward. They decided that they wanted to move the date to August and open the event out to everyone not just the children and young people of Calderdale.

Halifax Festival are looking for performers, venues, volunteers and sponsors. Please contact Lucy Burnett on lucy.burnett@halifaxfestival.co.uk 01422 353073 for a list of opportunities.

Alice Bradshaw

Alice Bradshaw works with a wide range of media and processes involving the manipulation of everyday objects and materials. Mass-produced, anonymous objects are often rendered dysfunctional caricatures of themselves, addressing concepts of purpose and futility. Alice creates or accentuates subtleties, blurring distinctions between the absurd and the mundane, with the notion that the environment the work exists in becomes integral to the work itself.

Alice is based in West Yorkshire and has exhibited prolifically in the UK and internationally. She also curates collaboratively on number of temporary and ongoing projects.
