The day to day life of a struggling artist.
I graduated from a fine art degree course at Wirral Metropolitan College in 2009 , continuing my practice through a fellowship course during 2009-2010 also at Wirral Metropolitan College. I work as an art technician in a high school three days a week. My art practice is based in printmaking, bookmaking and installation work.

For the last few days I've been feeling all arted out and can't motivate myself to make a start on anything new. I just feel exhausted. I'm hoping the time off at Christmas will sort me out and I can really get stuck into something new.

I've been in work today, trying to sort out the stock taking/ordering, of which I am not very good. I think the main problems is that my mind wonders as I am counting and I keep having to start over. Most of it is done now though, so onto more fun stuff. I started making stencils of letters but I haven't got very far yet, I need an alphabet set of A4 and A3 ones and I've only drawen out the A4 ones so far. But there's always tommorrow.
I'm planning on working on some of my own stuff tonight after tea. I've got so much to do and have ideas for new work that I can't start yet. I think I might have to jot the ideas down before I forget them, or I'll forget about them.

Tomorrow I'm taking work to leeds for the 'Home from Home' group exhibition. I'm always really nervous when I'm going to meet people for the first time, and I'm dreading showing them my work. Strange because I'm excited for it being in the exhibition but I'm always worried about them verifying that it's what they expected.

I managed to stab myself in my thumb today with a stanley knife in work and I printed off loads of images that where cropped without me realising. Not a good start but the rest of my day has gone well and once I got home I had a really productive evening. The new project is going really well, I'm probably the happiest I've ever been with my work before.

work is really busy at the moment in preparation for the gsces, I can't seem to get anything completed and it feels like it's time to go home almost as soon as I get there.
Yesterday I went to meet the owner of Wro, a resturant in West Kirby to discuss exhibiting some work in a new loft space but the meeting ended with me being comissioned to make five pieces of work. Great news for me and I need to make a start on thats as soon as I can. So i think the joint exhibition work will have to go on hold for a week or two.

My idea for a butterfly installation fro the Butterfly park in New Ferry has been excepted, so as soon as I've completed my commission and work for the joint exhibition with Steve I'll make a start. Don't think it'll take long though.
I went over to Blackburne house to discuss putting work into an exhibition space. It went well and I can basically put in whatever I want. It's not until November so there's time to make something new. There's no charge for showing your work and I think they only take 20% of anything sold. The downside is that the space isn't really right for sculptural pieces, but I think I can probably work around the space to make some sort of installation work still. The skylight is crying out for installation work but I think it's just too high for me to do anything with, but I'll have a think, it would be a shame not to use it.

It was the p.v to the Liverpool Open tonight which I have a piece of work in but I couldn't go because I couldn't get hold of my son so that we could pick him up early from his friends house. So was so annoyed with him when he finally got in touch but relieved too!
I've had news that I'll be showing my work at Memory B(l)anks exhibition at The Axis Art Centre 6th- 17th June.

The commisson is nearly finished and I've started work on the butterflies. The problem is we don't use enough plastic bottles in this house so I'm going to have to start asking people to save their empties.

The commission work is finally finished, took a little longer than expected but I'm glad they're completed in just over a week late, at one point I thought they'd never be completed. I'm just waiting to install them now.

The butterlies are coming on nicely but slowly for lack of bottles. I'm not sure how they are going to be hung yet, I really don't want to make holes in them but I can't think of another way. I suppose the answer is to go and look at the space that's been allotted, but it'll have to wait until next week as I've hurt my leg and am struggling to walk. Great hey, but atleast I've got two weeks so I'll be well recovered before going back to work.
