Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
The third Liverpool biennial launches on 18 September as a UK and international festival of contemporary art. Delivered through a partnership between Tate Liverpool, National Museums Liverpool, Bluecoat Art Centre and FACT, it also encompasses exhibitions and offsite projects across smaller galleries and alternative spaces. International 04 is the critical focus, with artworks commissioned from artists that emphasise relationships between city spaces and contemporary artists concerns. Researchers Sabine Breitweiser (Vienna), Yu Yeon Kim (New York), Cuauhtemoc Medina (Mexico) and Apinan Poshyanada (Bangkok) selected artists including Yoko Ono, Takashi Muramaki, Yang Fudong, Yael Bartana, Esko Mannikko, Rirkrit Tiranvanija and Inigo ManglanoOvalle. The independent is a set of exhibitions generated by artists, architects, filmmakers and other practitioners. Supported by afoundation, it takes place in a variety of settings ranging from galleries to temporary spaces in disused buildings, providing an opportunity for the regions artists to show their work and to present interesting work from across the UK and abroad.
