Rosemary Shirley visits Reading-based gallery and studio complex Open Hand Open Space and discovers what makes the organisation tick. Based in Reading, Open Hand Open Space (OHOS) provides studios for contemporary artists and runs a gallery space with a diverse programme of temporary exhibitions. The building, a Victorian military keep, houses up to sixteen studio spaces and retains much of its original character, including the high windows and thick walls of the former military cells. The organisation was originally formed in 1980 by a group of University of Reading graduates and over the past twenty years has provided studio space for over 100 artists. But as Studio Coordinator Jo Thomas points out "it is important to concentrate on the current members' activities, as with all artist-led organisations OHOS is only as effective as its membership at any one time". OHOS is currently thriving. The management of the organisation has evolved over its lifetime and consists of a board known as the Management Committee and an Operations Committee which oversees the day-to-day running of the organisation.
