Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
A wealth of artists' prizes have been announced recently, including the Jerwood Foundation, Oxo Peugeot Design Awards, Perspective 2003, and the Lexmark European Art Prize (See 'Prizegivings' in News). Large sums of money, prestige and publicity are among the benefits for the winning artists, but what motivates the organisers and sponsors of such awards? Putting a spotlight on a region and its artists is one aspect of prizes like the Comme Ca Art Prize North. It recently announced Paul Rooney as the beneficiary of its £10,000 prize and succeeded in momentarily capturing the attention of the national media. Whilst Wales, with its new biennial prize Artes Mundi (see 'Big Money' in News), is undoubtedly trying to raise its profile and cultural value as a nation by associating with internationally recognised, culturally diverse and exceptional artists, such as Xu Bing, Kara Walker and Janine Antoni on its shortlist.
