1+1=3 : Collaborators in portraiture Artist initiative curated by Susan Bright with artists Sara Haq, Emma Critchley, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Anna Fox, Wiebke Leister, Melanie Manchot, PAUL+A. The aim of 1+1=3 is to highlight the different strategies and approaches to collaboration in recent British photographic portraiture. A collaboration is often seen as a working arrangement between an artist and another person, group, or institution. Present throughout art history, collaborations are considered unusual today when artists tend to be valued for their individual voice and contribution to society. The initiative is an open network of visual artists/ curators exploring portraiture in art photography. The curators and the artists all work on an independent freelance basis, so 1+1=3 provides an opportunity for critical dialogue surrounding the artists’ practice. The exhibition is part of FotoFreo, a show happening in Fremantle, Western Australia in March 2006. The curators are trying to secure funding and a venue for the show to take place in London at the end of 2006, in which case the working group will have many more opportunities to come together for dialogues...
