Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
An exhibition project launched 30 April will focus on the significance of the artwork as object and the nature of its creation. Bringing together emerging artists from around the UK, the Mill Workers project at Islington Mill on Manchesters edge has been set up by Manchester artist Jonathan Trayner. The first exhibition, The Same But Different, shows work by Rana Begum, Siobhan Carroll, Antony Hall and Trayner himself. The four bodies of work in the show each express aspects of serial behaviour, advantage is taken of the uniformity of mass produced materials and scientific laws to provide consistent finishes narrative content and expressiveness are kept to minimum. Rana Begums work uses colour and line to create a visual aesthetic of rhythm and repetition with materials such as vinyl and electrical tapes, that are layered on wood or aluminium, with the available tapes and vinyl determine the palette of colours. Siobhan Carroll brings together set materials with a pre-determined methodology.
