Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
Its the drive and imagination of artists that is leading major exposures on contemporary visual arts in Leeds and Stroud in May and June that both focus on location.
Running 14-27 May and based on an open submission, Situation Leeds 07 is an independent contemporary visual art festival that explores and highlights the applications of art in public places through installations, events, debates, video and publications, involving some 100 artists. In its second year, this years event takes place in cafes, churches, buses, car parks and on the streets, as well as in a few art galleries. Amongst the special projects is French Mottersheads The Post Echo, a free tabloid newspaper created, published and circulated by the artists especially for Situation Leeds 07. The paper takes the form of a photographic journal featuring the public of Leeds, embodying people in situations previously reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post. Starting on the city centre streets with a daily invite from the artists to discuss yesterdays news stories, the public choose to personify or echo the unnamed person/s and their reported circumstance for the camera. Each resulting photo and chosen text is added to a week long record of events and published as The Post Echo.
