Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
A series of interventions by Johanna Hällsten are happening simultaneously at The Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh and Kunming Institute of Botany in China.
Sounds Like It explores our need for translation, both literally and metaphorically, within intercultural communication; drawing attention to processes of exchange and mediation between the participant, botanist and artist. A Swedish artist interested in notions of duration, change and movement in relation to specific events and acts occurring in everyday situations, Johanna Hällsten has exhibited nationally and internationally. A book on her practice will be launched by Yingpan Brother Publishing this autumn. She is currently a lecturer in fine art at Loughborough University. For this project, the artist has worked with botanists at the two institutions, researching the processes by which they collate data. The project is manifested through works that use photography, objects and audio that have undergone a process of collection, interpretation and then re-insertion into the locations. Web streaming between the gardens will enable a visual and auditory link, revealing what is foreign and creating an alternative pathway between the two places.
