Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
In September 2001, Hartlepool Borough Council advertised the post of 'Environmental Improvements and Art Link Officer'. Guy Rawlinson explains how the project is progressing after the appointment of two artists to the post. The Headland, Hartlepool is undergoing a major regeneration initiative, with a programme of environmental improvements and public art at its heart. Although currently ranking in the top two per cent nationally of most deprived wards, the area has a definite sense of place. Known locally as 'Old Hartlepool' and focussd on the impressive St Hilda's Church, the area requires sensitive interventions. Both the built and natural environments are a source of pride to the closely-knit community of Headland residents. It was apparent that ensuring maximum community engagement during the development and implementation of the programme would require a full-time post. Following an advertisement in [a-n] MAGAZINE, it was decided to employ two artists, Roger Dickinson and Mary Patterson, both with a considerable experience of working on public sculpture projects in the North East of England.
