Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
In the November 1998 issue of [a-n] MAGAZINE, Corridor Arts advertised for a multi-media artist to work on a three-year project with a range of people to produce their own digital images and video art. The post was given to artist Helen Ward, who talks about this opportunity to combine both her participatory and commissioned work.
Imagination Technology has been unique in that it has offered me, as the lead artist, the rare opportunity to work on a project over an extended period of time, and to use my skills in participatory work alongside a challenging commission. Run by Corridor Arts, a Barnsley-based organisation working in community and participatory arts, Imagination Technology, primarily funded by The Arts Council of England/Lottery A4E scheme, is aimed at encouraging participation in, and understanding of, digital/multimedia arts. Starting in April 1999, I ran a series of taster workshops for people of all ages and abilities on the creation of their own digital images and video art. I have gradually progressed work with certain groups over a longer period, creating interactive, web and video works, and enabling them to achieve greater results. I have worked with young people in a variety of settings; groups with physical and learning difficulties, and older people usually through partnerships with other organisations and often bringing in other artists. As I move into the project's final year I intend to mirror ideas from my own work with participating groups, and encourage them to continue...
