Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing

Affect, read as the embodied connection we make with one another and with artworks, is the theme of the fifth Art Sheffield (6 March - 3 May, various locations). Taking George Perec's Life: A User's Manual as inspiration, artists are asked to place the value of interpersonal experience in a framework of economic and environmental crisis. Phil Collins, Katarina Seda, Becky Shaw, Ruth Ewan and others have created works for six local spaces, including the artist-run S1, Site and Bloc galleries as well as the public realm. 'Random Acts of Art' (6 March - 1 May, Spacex) keeps up the spirit of collaboration; a new wave of relational art is explored by Amy Feneck, Lady Lucy and Volkhardt Muller. All three artists respond directly to Exeter's West Quarter, working with residents there in a series of co-authored pieces. Following a period when works will be generated onsite - mobile portrait studio, performance to camera and research for a scripted piece - the gallery will open for public exhibition and artist-led events and a fabulous May Day tea party.
