Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
The core of the Stiwdio Safle programme is the ongoing professional development and practise of the artist and the public realm context they inhabit and respond to.
Their interactions and connections with people and communities are vital to the appreciation of creativity and the empowerment of all concerned that comes from this knowledge. It was the question of how artists at the beginning of their career get the necessary experience and knowledge of making work in the public realm, while having the opportunity to forward their creative practice, that triggered the initial spark of the idea for the Safle Graduate Award. The award is effectively a commission for a graduate to develop and create a temporary artwork (or series of artworks) in the public realm anywhere in Wales with the guidance, support and mentoring of Safle. At his interview, the first recipient of the Safle Graduate Award, Alistair Owen presented a series of images of work he had made in college, which dealt with space and its occupation in an understated way. He also showed photographic images of objects in outdoor environments that demonstrated an interest in investigating possibilities in the public realm.
