Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
Lizzie Muller and Andy Roshay of the Digital Arts Network describe how the network addresses the need for regional collaboration in digital arts development.
The Digital Arts Network (DAN) was launched in April 1999 to draw together artists, organisations and audiences interested in digital arts in the east of England. The network began as a small online community with a weekly email newsletter. Since then, DAN has become a thriving community with over 300 members, providing initiatives to support digital arts development. DAN aims to provide tools and opportunities for individuals from different backgrounds, with different skills, to cooperate. Our networking events, and the email communication which is the backbone of the network, are about sharing, distributing and circulating information getting it to the people who need it and making it meaningful and useful. The networking events centre on critical debate, looking at key aspects of emerging art and technology practice. Early events convinced us that there was a desperate need for a critical forum for ideas and discussion about digital art that was responsive and specific to the eastern region.
