Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
Two north west projects are creating links between artists, artist-led groups and creative communities.
Contemporary Cartography //01, a guide and overview map of creative activity in Manchester and Salford, was launched during October's Manchester Weekender. The freely available pocket-sized map was researched and produced by writer/researcher Laura Mansfield in collaboration the Manchester Municipal Design Corporation. Speaking about the map's function, Mansfield said it aimed to "demonstrate the strands of independent activity occurring alongside obvious or well known city venues and galleries, encouraging more people to seek out the often hard to find or out-of-the-way spaces". Highlighting a city's lesser known venues is also one aim of The Cooperative, a new addition to the Liverpool Biennial. Sitting alongside the Biennial's international programme and the Independents Biennial, this comprises city collectives Mercy, The Sound Network, Jump Ship Rat, Red Wire, The Royal Standard, Arena and The Lost Soul and Stranger Service Station. Taking advantage of funding and space available through the Shops Upfront scheme run by Culture Liverpool, The Cooperative is housed in the old Rapid paint shop for the Biennial's duration.
