Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
The Arts and Disability Forum based in Belfast offers grants of up to £5,000 to disabled artists throughout Ireland working in all art forms. Awards are granted for a specific project or body of work. Seeing it both ways is a collection of work by visually impaired artist Padraig Naughton. Naughton regards himself as a tactile and visual artist, his practice covers clay-relief sculpture and charcoal drawing; the different processes informing and contradicting each other. "Working intuitively with clay I evolved a way of handling the material that was very similar to the way a holistic masseur works; eyes closed and relaxed, I concentrate on treating the surface in its many different aspects. On one level there is a similarity to the way I manipulate clay and charcoal: I like to work both materials with my hands. However, while my sculpture is about excluding visual images so I can focus on a tactile aesthetic my drawing would not exist were it not for me continually recording and evaluating the landscape in a visual way."
