Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
This month we profile a selection of open exhibition and public art commissioning projects, from applied arts opportunities to innovative site-specific works.
Jerwood Makers Open is a new three-year exhibition series designed to promote and celebrate emerging artists working in the applied arts. The scheme replaces Jerwood Contemporary Makers, a series which ran from 2008 to 2010. Each year, four significant bursaries of £7,500 will be awarded to makers submitting proposals for bold new work or works, which will then be exhibited within the Jerwood Visual Arts programme. Makers will be selected by an independent panel of leading practitioners, curators and academics. Jerwood Makers Open sets out to provide a space to survey and question definitions of making within contemporary visual arts practice, and to support makers in the early stages of their careers with fresh opportunities to make work or explore new forms of practice. Silversmith David Clarke was selected for the 2010 Contemporary Makers exhibition, with his silver plated pewter and lead coffee pot Ooh LaLa.
