Shift happens

a-n Editor Gillian Nicol gives a brief overview of the Shift Happens conference in York.

I was in York this week at Shift Happens, an annual conference organised by pilot theatre around Arts, Learning and Technology. The focus leant towards theatre and the performing arts but was looking broadly at the huge shifts we are undergoing with technology and what this means for the arts.

Highlights included:
Sir Ken Robinson beamed in from LA via Skype talking about how we have a choice about how we use technology and the wider world issues that we should all be trying to change.(His fantastic TED presentation from 2006 is a must-watch for anyone interested in creativity and education Schools kill creativity)
Alice Greenwald of the 911 memorial museum on memory and remembrance and talking about overlaying 9/11 archive images on google streetview national911memorial.org.
Mind the Gap theatre company that work with young people with learning difficulties who've used 360degree photos combined with video clips to "open up our process" www.mind-the-gap.org.uk and i'm with stupid
Mediasnackers presentation on using social media which can be read in full here
And artist Jonathan Harris showing us the amazing things he has constructed by drawing data out of the internet. See his website: www.number27.org and in particular the 'we feel fine' project We feel fine

There was a mountain of Twitter activity going on meaning that at certain points the hashtag #shifthappens was trending in the UK and by the end of the event stats showed that the #shifthappen tweets had made 2.7million impressions. 284,000 people reached with 3,000 tweets made by 410 tweeters over two days. Impressive indeed.

Here are a couple of the latest tweets on the subject that link to blog posts with many further links for those that want to explore the content further.
