Redeye Photography network

In 1998 a group of photographers met up in a Manchester pub to discuss some Arts Council England research into what the regions practitioners needed in terms of support. The answer was more complex than it first appeared. Whilst some required darkrooms, others wanted digital facilities, exhibition space, presentations by other photographers, and help with business and legal matters. Most importantly they wanted to talk and listen, to learn from each other's experiences. A year later, Redeye was constituted as a non-profit organisation aiming to make life easier for photographers in the region and beyond by providing information, opportunities, events, training and professional development. Through its website it offers a number of services that are free for anyone to use. An email bulletin and printed newsletter containing news and opportunities is distributed; open meetings are held every six weeks; informal portfolio sessions are organised with other photographers and anyone is free to email or phone for help and advice on any photographic subject. Paid events are also organised that include talks by well-known photographers, workshops, portfolio sessions with buyers and editors and facilitated forums in which a small group can discuss issues with an acknowledged expert.
