Research visit to Manifesta 9
WHO: Curators and artists based in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Recent graduate or similar experience. Proven experience and interest in contemporary art. A commitment to developing a project during the next Art Sheffield Festival. Available to attend the Manifesta research visit: 1 - 4 June. Commit to writing a short evaluative report following the visit. Have a valid passport.
WHAT: Art Sheffield are seeking applications from curators and artists to participate in a four day research visit to Manifesta 9, led by the Art Sheffield 2013 Festival Team. Participants in the research visit will subsequently develop a proposal for Art Sheffield 13. Manifesta 9 takes place at the impressive site of the former Waterschei mine in Genk, Belgium. For the first time in the history of Manifesta, the biennial will combine an international selection of contemporary art with an impressive collection of historical works displaying the rich mining heritage. The Deep of the Modern, curated by Curator Cuauhtemoc Medina will be presented as a triptych. The first section will display new work, created in response to the regional context and linking this with global issues. The art historical section provides an overview of 19th and 20th century works of art which take as their subject the impact of the coal industry. The third section focuses on the extensive legacy that theLimburg mining industry has left behind.
WHEN: Art Sheffield is developing this tour to expand the creative contribution to the next Art Sheffield Festival, which will take place at sites across Sheffield from October - December 2013. The tour will take place 1-4 June 2012. Deadline to apply: Wednesday 23 May, 12pm.
PAYMENTS: Accommodation costs within Belgium and return travel cost from the UK to Belgium will be covered by Art Sheffield.
CHARGES: Selected applicants will be required to cover their individual travel costs within Belgium where necessary and all individual food and drink
DETAILS: Participating in the programme does not guarantee inclusion in Art Sheffield 2013. This programme is subject to Art Sheffield receiving Arts Council funding.
