Carolyn Shepherd: St Luke's, Liverpool - Proposal for Kinetic Solar Powered Roof

St Luke's, Liverpool - Proposal for Kinetic Solar Powered Roof

Phillip Niccolls, Lauren J Piercy, Carolyn Shepherd, 'St Luke's, Liverpool - Proposal for Kinetic Solar Powered Roof', Mixed media, Mar '10. Photo: Carolyn Shepherd. A collaborative site specific project to respond to the 'Bombed Out Church' of St Luke's in Liverpool city centre.  St Luke's has rich wartime history but is now a peace memorial and the centre of a colourful alternative arts scene.  It is this colour and energy that the group responded to in designing a roof of coloured umbrellas that are powered by the wind into a kinetic motion and from solar power generated by a beautiful stained glass window featuring a phoenix rising from the ashes.  It captures the essence of the wartime devastation and the rebirth of community spirit into a colourful, fun design.
