Thought it would be a good idea to post some of my work from A/W term which I am still finding helpful/influential. My method of creating these images comes from rapidly drawing the portrait without looking at the page at all and just focusing on the figure. The drawings were a starting point and I've become very fond of this way of working; I think the speed of executing the drawings creates an energy and spontaneity that I couldn't achieve from more detailed observational studies. Also, there is something very exciting about looking for the first time at the drawing you've made and seeing strange distorted resemblances between it and the sitter. I will hopefully get some images of the initial drawings to post on here soon. The paintings originated from drawings using this method, and are either taken from direct observation or from reproductions of portraits by artists such as Goya or Rembrandt. Originally the paintings I made from other artists' work were merely meant for working out colour pallettes to use in my own work (this is something I need to work on!) but I found these strange pastiches really enjoyable so got a bit lost in creating them for a while! However they were starting to get a bit caricature-ish which wasn't what I was attempting to do, so I'm more focused on developing my own compositions this term....
