This module carries 50% of the final year marks and 35.5% of the entire B.A. marks. So it is important!Today, after 3.5 years of work, through Foundation and B.A., I have to put my work on-the-final-line and begin preparations for that - now all important - degree show in June.Today, as is usual, I start with a blank slate.Of course I have my life experience, but now I need a trigger to start this leg of my journey.  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [6 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 There is one potential source of interference - the dissertation. For my course, this is 6,000 words and is due for submission at the beginning of March. So in truth January will be 70% dissertation and 30% final show project. If all goes well then this balance should flip to become 30% dissertation and 70% final show project in February and then 100% final show project from March to the beginning of June. At least that is the current plan, but like all plans it is only a best estimate based on what is currently known.... Heavy snow forces work to continue in the home studio rather than the college studio. Some tasks are better done in peace and quiet, so this is no great hardship. Time to rework chapter 2 of the dissertation I think.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [7 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 How did I get to this point in my journey? No I'm not going to fill this blog with the past. http://blog.codedimages.com has been going for the past year and contains a (slightly random) sample of were my journey has been. Please visit if you want to know more. What I will do is attach the occasional image of work I consider important. Here I have attached two such works, one installation and a triptych as yet undisplayed. PS. We are still snowed out of college, so home is where the studio is for this week.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 We have a different tutor for the final show project. We last crossed paths, as official tutor / student, in the first year. So my first task is to bring her up-to-speed on the many developments in-between. A short period of reflection is required and I might as well record the key-points here. Yesterday I posted some images from a line of enquiry that was all about a gestural code. Today I have a couple of pictures of a coded work made using graph paper and self adhesive office labels. You should begin to see a theme of codes and coded messages, (typically) made using office materials. Although I do use other materials from time-to-time. The criteria is usually what works best. PS. Travel report. Travel is possible today, but as Friday is a studio day I will continue in the home studio.... Working with self adhesive office labels (last year) I became interested in circle and square. I made a series of images that combined circle and square with logic truth tables. The truth tables come from my first career as a systems engineer. Researching circle and square art I - of course - found Victor Vasarely. Circles and squares have since become key components. And the idea of component and reuse are also now strong influences.... These represent a coincidence of lines of enquiry exploring: circle, square, phi, colour, random, logic, code, and uncertainty. These images are all digital. There is a continuing tension between analogue and digital production. Other dialogues (maybe tensions) that might prove important are: positive - negative; reflective- transmissive; monochrome - colour; circle - square. These pairs seem to align well with my dissertation which begins with Aristotle's Pythagorean table of opposites.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [11 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I'll finish this reflective start (to the blog) with an up-to-date artist statement. If you have visited my personal web or blog you will notice this has not changed. I wrote this version in December, at the end of our Studio Practice 3 module, and this recent period of reflection has only served to strengthen my belief in its accuracy. Of course it will continue to develop over the coming months, but that is the nature of such a statement. Like a plan it can only be a best estimate (for the now). Artist Statement for David Riley(as of 10th January 2010) My art requires a trigger point, some life event, an ongoing interest, or an idea discovered while exploring another avenue - serendipity is important. It involves researching the idea and the techniques that can be applied. It can involve learning a new way of doing, a new way of thinking, or some form of exploration along a familiar line of enquiry, but beyond territory previously covered. It is influenced by my life experience, and my first career as a systems engineer. Code, mathematics, diagrams and organisation are important. Components and reuse are often present; consequently the outcome is often a series rather than a single work. My process involves a starting point which I work away from. Each step taken is recorded (in a journal) to ensure no thought is lost and to protect the possibility of returning later to an idea or discovery. I cannot predict what comes next. If I could, it is very likely I would stop and take the next step in an entirely different direction. The materials used are chosen to suit the enquiry, but often include: marker pen, paper, self adhesive office labels, tracing paper, artist board and acrylic paint. A digital camera, scanner, inkjet printer, computer and software (including: office, raster graphic, vector graphic, video and bespoke self designed applications) are considered important. I use these tools in much the same way another artist might use assistants. An enjoyable consequence of research is finding artists who have crossed the same path. When this happens I will take time to consider their motivation, process and outcomes. In doing so I benefit from their experience, increased confidence in my own decision making and a clearer idea of what must be done next. I consider the journey as fundamental. The journey must please me. The outcome must please me and have an aesthetic that others might consider interesting. There is always a strong desire to share what is discovered.  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [13 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week CIRCUARE has moved from monochrome to colour. That is, the recording of this line of enquiry in my journal has reached the stage when colour becomes a component. I did a lot of unrecorded (1) work over the seasonal break that is only now finding its way into the journal. This sometimes happens when I am chasing a line of thought in the digital domain. The forensic record is all on the computers and I use the need to transfer this to the first-world journal as a trigger for reflection. (puting this in the journal allows my tutors easy access for assesment purposes too) I am happy with both the monochrome and colour symbol sets and enjoyed the process of development. The initial clinical digital aesthetic is interesting, but now is the time to explore different ways of presenting and using these basic components. There is a growing tension between analogue and digital production. A tension I need to explore further. There is also more uncertainty to explore by applying the ideas and techniques from the monochrome three planes of uncertainty series to the colour symbol set. Also, there is a second draft of the dissertation to write following useful constructive feedback on the first draft. So lots to do.   (1) by 'unrecorded' I mean with no formal recording of the processes or outcomes other than the computer files generated at the time.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [15 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today has been all about the dissertation. After some excellent feedback [on my first draft] I have been working on the next revision. Hopefully this one will hang together and be better balanced in terms of: primary research, secondary, research, the opinions of others, and my own input. Unfortunately formal writing is [as usual] taking a dissproportionate amount of time when compared to the assesment marks on offer. But I guess that is just the way life is when doing something we find hard.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [20 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week has seen a continued effort to finish the dissertation. There is still work to be done on the conclusion, but it is going well and the end is in-sight. In parallel, I have continued to work with the CIRCUARE symbols in the digital domain. There have been many composite images made that convey a coded message using both the monochrome and the colour symbol sets. The colour symbol set has also been used as a basis for a series of more uncertain outcomes, outcomes I describe as static kinetic. I include some sample images made for this series, a series designed to be viewed in a transmissive medium like a computer monitor or digital TV. Some test prints, made with pigment ink on archival matte paper, prove they also print well. They have a different feel in a reflective medium, but it is valid nonetheless. It may be worth considering the investment in a much larger mounted print to see how a significant increase in scale might change the way the image can be read. I am considering a Lambda print mounted on aluminum or dibond. An acrylic face-mount would be ideal, but remains outside my budget. The problem with technology is that it is oh so easy to breach the budget. Affordability and logistics become a very important consideration. Budgets and risk management can put pressure on ambition. I guess financing art production is not a new issue for an artist!... This is the first version to include a conclusion. I also have complete end-notes, illustration references and bibliography. There is still more tweaking to do, but if the deadline were tomorrow, then there would be something of reasonable quality to submit. Relief is the word of the moment...... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [24 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Following a review of progress, I have taken a step back.It became clear that to continue with just 27 codes in my symbol set would be to journey down a blind alley. I had reached a point where having symbols only for alpha and space became just too restrictive. So what to do!After some investigation (via sketching in my journal) I made the decision to add a triangle to my circle and square (this also fits with my dissertation research of Vasarely). Now this may have triggered a trip back to square one and an entirely new journey, where I build a new set of symbols from scratch, a set that could include all three shapes in a single symbol. However, by way of preference, I like to reuse what has gone before, so instead I have decided to add to my symbols already based on circle and square (this also fits with the way new systems are built on the architecture of earlier incarnations). As the circle and square (CIRCUARE) symbols were built using a times 3 principle, it seems logical (and comfortable) to try to use times 3 again. So if CIRCUARE is 1 then I need another 2 sets to make 3.So we already have:CIRCle + sqUARE = CIRCUARETo which I will add:TRIAngle + ciRCLE = TRIARCLESQUAre + triANGLE = SQUANGLEThe naming convention was chosen to reflect the contortions that are often brought to bare in the naming of computer projects or systems, where the hunt for the right TLA, FLA or in this case ELA (eight letter abbreviation) can often appear to be of vital importance! Whatever you (or I) may think of these abbreviations they are a convenient shorthand. This trebling of resources will allow my code symbols to represent 27 x 3 = 81 codes. This will suffice for now and we will see how far I go before this new set becomes too restrictive. This week will be spent working out and recording the new symbols.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [31 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week I started out with the intention of creating the two new symbol sets I mentioned in my last post. As it happens, a line of conversation in a tutorial has set me off on a different path. So, instead of creating those symbols I have been questioning the role of the hand-made in my work. Where is the balance between the idea and the execution. Will I be satisfied with the aesthetic of the entirely machine made output. Can I find my own balance point between hand-made and machine-made. In all of this there is a large element of self doubt too. Maybe this is just my nerves on edge at the realisation that four years of dedicated work is about to come to a head, about to be tested in the spotlight of a final show! The danger is that, while procrastinating over the various arguments raging in my head, I dither and fail to make a decision. To break this deadlock I will try something different. I haven't lifted a paint brush for eighteen months (since my last life class) and so this week I will set-up a canvas and see what feel I get from using paint again. So, this week, I will paint in the college studio during the day and I will create new symbols on the computer in the home studio in the evening. Can I connect the two in some meaningful way?... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [4 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The painting idea didn't get very far. Very early on it became obvious that paint was not the right medium for this line of enquiry (at least not paint and canvas). It was good to experiment, but painting is now off the agenda. On the other hand, the process of deriving the expanded symbol set went very well. The exploration made connections to alternative methods of presentation. I now have a rough idea of the components and organisation I need for the exhibition. I have more experiments to perform in order to prototype the components The symbols are begining to stand-alone, the connection with their original purpose now seems less important. I feel the need for a detailed plan. I sound like an engineer again. I'm not sure if that is positive, negative or just an inevitable consequence of my past - probably the later!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 On Thursday we have a group critique. Apparently this will coincide with a visit from our external examiner, so no pressure there! Between now and then I have our installation room booked. I aim to setup some video test pieces using both a digital photo frame and a computer projector. I have the frame but need to borrow a projector. The college should be able to supply this kit, but you never can be absolutely certain. Despite, or maybe because of my systems engineering background, I am dubious about using technology in the final show - unless I can ensure there are backups available for each and every item. My risk management experience tells me that if something can go wrong it will, so unless backups can be guaranteed then the show will be low tech. Anyway, the installation test this week should help me decide how hard to work toward making the technology available as an integral part of the exhibit. Key dates approaching: group critique 11th February; dissertation deadline 3rd March; deadline for my final show catalogue information 1st March. We have the half term break next week followed by a reading week (where many students are off to Venice, but not I).... With luck this can happen tomorrow and I can hand it in. When it is out of my hands I will then focus 100% on the final project and exhibition. I also sent in my exhibition catalogue information today. The image is generic and should act as a visual clue for anything I might actually exhibit. The installation tests are going well. I like the intimacy of the digital photo frame. My budget will cover a backup frame, so this is one piece of technology that might yet find a place in the exhibition.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [12 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Not been too well the later half of the week, forcing me to miss the group critique. Very unhappy about that, I like to have my say and, more important, listen to what others say. The group critique is also a good way to keep up with what others are doing. The dissertation is bound and ready to hand in next time I am in college. I may go in next week (half term) just to get it out of my hands and safely beyond fiddling with! Next week I will be exploring alternative ways of storing and displaying a large number of images (100 to 500). One method I have used in the past is the Bochner inspired ring binder. I may yet use this method again. It is certainly cost-effective and relevant to the engineering inspired connections of my symbols.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [14 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 A litle experiment with format. Another method of display for the symbols has been simple postcards. This requires a change in format which at least has me questioning the assumption that square is best. I will test rectangular, both portrait and landscape. During half term I may also have another go with canvas and paint. or at least mixed media. I feel like I gave up too quickly on my last attempt. In any case I love to experiment with materials that feel a little uncomfortable to work with. Very little that is creative comes out of working inside the comfort zone. There is much temptation to find and follow an easy route to a final show, but my best work comes from exploration and work at the edge of what I understand and can already do. I must hold my nerve and keep experimenting, keeping faith in my ability to discover something fresh and interesting just-in-time for the exhibition. Put the work in and something good will happen!... A special trip for the ceremonial handing over of the dissertation (there is a receipting system to give me proof of submission). Despite it being half term, my tutor Sarah is happy to accept the work and I am happy for the expected relief of it being beyond my control.... I am walking around like a Cheshire cat!!! Immediately, I picked up a 6B pencil and made some drawings directly onto the studio backing boards. This was another good moment, as I realised there is potential here for displaying symbols on a grand scale, but quite simply and very relevant to a drawing course. There are two close-up images attached here. These are very quick and unrefined so there will be more experimenting in March (after the reading week).... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today I wrote this in response to a comment made on another forum: "I am in a constant dialogue between digital and analogue, one informing the other. I flip and flop between the two, occasionally they meet in the middle somewhere and create something special. In logic, flip-flops are bistable elements, in my art digital and analogue are more bi-unstable, almost as if there is a self clocking mechanism encouraging constant movement between states and exploration of the space in-between." This simple statement seems to sum-up so much of what my work is about at this moment. The big question is, can I resolve something that will capture this dialogue within an exhibition. This morning I completed the digital domain resolution of the symbols I have been working on. I now have: 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81 monochrome and 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81 colour symbols. (based on the combining of two of three geometric shapes: triangle, circle and square) 27 TRIARCLE monochrome symbols 27 CIRCUARE monochrome symbols 27 SQUANGLE monochrome symbols 27 TRIARCLE colour symbols 27 CIRCUARE colour symbols 27 SQUANGLE colour symbols 162 symbols in all. As per my last post, the next phase involves exploring the analogue potential of these symbols and the scale and materials of analogue production. some strange terms defined: TRIAngle + ciRCLE = TRIARCLE CIRCle + sqUARE = CIRCUARE SQUAre + triaNGLE = SQUANGLE DIgital + anALOGUE = DIALOGUE.  ... With no college (reading week) and the dissertation out of my hands, I relaxed and became hooked on a phrase framed as a challenge (on another site). The challenge was to make work in response to: the alarm kept ringing... I became hooked on the idea of making a purely conceptual piece in the form of a set of instructions written loosely in the style of a computer programme. The outcome was this. || the alarm kept ringing... || | instructions | 01. select an alarm-device;02. load a suitable alarm onto the alarm-device;03. set the alarm-device to sound the alarm;04. select a sound-recording-device;05. set the sound-recording-device to record the sound from the alarm-device;06. start the alarm-device;07. start the sound-recording-device;08. wait one minute;09. stop the sound-recording-device;10. stop the alarm-device;11. select a time-display-device;12. set the time-display-device to the correct time;13. select a sound-recording-playback-device;14. load the alarm recording onto the sound-recording-playback-device;15. set the sound-recording-playback-device to continuous loop;16. select a moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;17. set the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device to observe and record the time-display-device and the sound-recording-playback-device;18. start the time-display-device;19. start the sound-recording-playback-device;20. start the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;21. wait for 24 hours;22. stop the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;23. stop the sound-recording-playback-device;24. stop the time-display-device;25. select a moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;26. load the moving picture and sound recording onto the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;27. set the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device to continuous loop;28. start the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;29. wait forever. | components | alarm-device, sound-recording-device, time-display-device,sound-recording-playback-device, moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device,moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device. | actions | select, load, set, start, wait, stop. || revad, 2010, version rc2 || This is release candidate 2, I went through a process of beta, rc1 and rc2. Unless I find a fault, rc2 will become version 1.0. My only outstanding questions are: Do I follow the instructions and make the physical work? Or, do I leave it and get back to work for the final show? Or, do I change direction and incorporate this idea into my subsequent work? To some extent the questions are rhetorical, as everything I do has an impact on what comes next. Maybe I will make the idea manifest, maybe I won't, but it will impact what comes next - there is no doubt!... I say 'new' but of course this is really another step back into my past, where I used an overhead projector, film and pens during my time as a company training school technical tutor. The thought here is to use the film to provide the ability to overlay ideas and (being in roll form) represent the serial nature of the exploration. I am looking forward to reconnecting with what were once such familiar everyday materials. As I continue my journey, ideas for the final exhibition presentation are beginning to form. So far, I have sketched out and recorded a half dozen strong possibilities None of them are final, but I wouldn't expect that at this stage. The pressure is on to deliver the text and photographs for the exhibition catalogue by next Thursday. No problem there, but agreeing the cover design and general layout is proving a little more problematic. I have to say it is so easy to spend far too much time worrying about such things when any one of a huge range of ideas would quite obviously be fit for purpose. A decision will be taken collectively and another step toward the exhibition will be made.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [12 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This past week I found myself laying out six short books (40 pages each) based around recording the TRIARCLE, CIRCUARE and SQUANGLE symbols in both monochrome and colour. Books seem to be a natural way of recording and presenting a serial idea. I plan to add these to my self-published series, they will be ready after I have checked the initial batch in about a month. Will they form part of the exhibition, maybe but it is still too early to say for sure. The recent work on potential installations has suggested many possibilities, strengthening confidence that whatever space I have allocated for the exhibition I can adapt my work to fit. So, for now, I can park all thoughts about the final installation and return my focus to exploring and making new work. There are still issues with getting the exhibition catalogue into print. There is little I can do, as it is for others to  deliver their contribution, so I will relax and let things take their natural course.... Actually it is more like 240+ as each drawing will have a minimum of three layers. The idea is to create a dialogue between my analogue and digital work and for this I need to consider how this dialogue might be displayed. This week's exploration is therefore centred around materials that can be used in overlaying one image on another and how these might be presented in a gallery environment. The books are in print. I can't wait to have them in my hands, to find out if they work as 3D objects rather than the 2D virtual constructs I made on the computer. The timetable for the final exhibition is starting to come together and it looks like the private view will be the evening of 9th June, still to be confirmed, so watch this space (should you be at all interested!).... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 An excellent few days! After two very good tutorials (we have two tutors for this final module), I am convinced my ideas are progressing in the right direction. The testing of overlays went well and I have planned more detailed experiments to confirm the exact approach. Yesterday there was room to test the screen installation for the first time and this allowed several issues to come to the surface. Some key words are: lighting, reflection, cabling, power, position, mounting, surface, relationship, logic and emotion. I have agreed to build a model of the installation and this coupled with further component experiments will inform decision making before commencing on the full size build and further refinement in April. More materials were ordered, my budget still looks about right and I still have a contingency for the unexpected. We also did some group work on our artist statements. This was fun and a good excuse to get together as a group. A chance to relax - just a little. [EDIT] In one exercise we had to fill the [BLANK] in this statement with an appropriate verb: I [BLANK] drawing(s). It was suggested that I worry drawings, but I thought that I argue drawings was more appropriate for me and a little less scary too! An excellent few days!...
