This module carries 50% of the final year marks and 35.5% of the entire B.A. marks. So it is important!Today, after 3.5 years of work, through Foundation and B.A., I have to put my work on-the-final-line and begin preparations for that - now all important - degree show in June.Today, as is usual, I start with a blank slate.Of course I have my life experience, but now I need a trigger to start this leg of my journey.  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [6 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 There is one potential source of interference - the dissertation. For my course, this is 6,000 words and is due for submission at the beginning of March. So in truth January will be 70% dissertation and 30% final show project. If all goes well then this balance should flip to become 30% dissertation and 70% final show project in February and then 100% final show project from March to the beginning of June. At least that is the current plan, but like all plans it is only a best estimate based on what is currently known.... Heavy snow forces work to continue in the home studio rather than the college studio. Some tasks are better done in peace and quiet, so this is no great hardship. Time to rework chapter 2 of the dissertation I think.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [7 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 How did I get to this point in my journey? No I'm not going to fill this blog with the past. http://blog.codedimages.com has been going for the past year and contains a (slightly random) sample of were my journey has been. Please visit if you want to know more. What I will do is attach the occasional image of work I consider important. Here I have attached two such works, one installation and a triptych as yet undisplayed. PS. We are still snowed out of college, so home is where the studio is for this week.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 We have a different tutor for the final show project. We last crossed paths, as official tutor / student, in the first year. So my first task is to bring her up-to-speed on the many developments in-between. A short period of reflection is required and I might as well record the key-points here. Yesterday I posted some images from a line of enquiry that was all about a gestural code. Today I have a couple of pictures of a coded work made using graph paper and self adhesive office labels. You should begin to see a theme of codes and coded messages, (typically) made using office materials. Although I do use other materials from time-to-time. The criteria is usually what works best. PS. Travel report. Travel is possible today, but as Friday is a studio day I will continue in the home studio.... Working with self adhesive office labels (last year) I became interested in circle and square. I made a series of images that combined circle and square with logic truth tables. The truth tables come from my first career as a systems engineer. Researching circle and square art I - of course - found Victor Vasarely. Circles and squares have since become key components. And the idea of component and reuse are also now strong influences.... These represent a coincidence of lines of enquiry exploring: circle, square, phi, colour, random, logic, code, and uncertainty. These images are all digital. There is a continuing tension between analogue and digital production. Other dialogues (maybe tensions) that might prove important are: positive - negative; reflective- transmissive; monochrome - colour; circle - square. These pairs seem to align well with my dissertation which begins with Aristotle's Pythagorean table of opposites.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [11 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I'll finish this reflective start (to the blog) with an up-to-date artist statement. If you have visited my personal web or blog you will notice this has not changed. I wrote this version in December, at the end of our Studio Practice 3 module, and this recent period of reflection has only served to strengthen my belief in its accuracy. Of course it will continue to develop over the coming months, but that is the nature of such a statement. Like a plan it can only be a best estimate (for the now). Artist Statement for David Riley(as of 10th January 2010) My art requires a trigger point, some life event, an ongoing interest, or an idea discovered while exploring another avenue - serendipity is important. It involves researching the idea and the techniques that can be applied. It can involve learning a new way of doing, a new way of thinking, or some form of exploration along a familiar line of enquiry, but beyond territory previously covered. It is influenced by my life experience, and my first career as a systems engineer. Code, mathematics, diagrams and organisation are important. Components and reuse are often present; consequently the outcome is often a series rather than a single work. My process involves a starting point which I work away from. Each step taken is recorded (in a journal) to ensure no thought is lost and to protect the possibility of returning later to an idea or discovery. I cannot predict what comes next. If I could, it is very likely I would stop and take the next step in an entirely different direction. The materials used are chosen to suit the enquiry, but often include: marker pen, paper, self adhesive office labels, tracing paper, artist board and acrylic paint. A digital camera, scanner, inkjet printer, computer and software (including: office, raster graphic, vector graphic, video and bespoke self designed applications) are considered important. I use these tools in much the same way another artist might use assistants. An enjoyable consequence of research is finding artists who have crossed the same path. When this happens I will take time to consider their motivation, process and outcomes. In doing so I benefit from their experience, increased confidence in my own decision making and a clearer idea of what must be done next. I consider the journey as fundamental. The journey must please me. The outcome must please me and have an aesthetic that others might consider interesting. There is always a strong desire to share what is discovered.  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [13 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week CIRCUARE has moved from monochrome to colour. That is, the recording of this line of enquiry in my journal has reached the stage when colour becomes a component. I did a lot of unrecorded (1) work over the seasonal break that is only now finding its way into the journal. This sometimes happens when I am chasing a line of thought in the digital domain. The forensic record is all on the computers and I use the need to transfer this to the first-world journal as a trigger for reflection. (puting this in the journal allows my tutors easy access for assesment purposes too) I am happy with both the monochrome and colour symbol sets and enjoyed the process of development. The initial clinical digital aesthetic is interesting, but now is the time to explore different ways of presenting and using these basic components. There is a growing tension between analogue and digital production. A tension I need to explore further. There is also more uncertainty to explore by applying the ideas and techniques from the monochrome three planes of uncertainty series to the colour symbol set. Also, there is a second draft of the dissertation to write following useful constructive feedback on the first draft. So lots to do.   (1) by 'unrecorded' I mean with no formal recording of the processes or outcomes other than the computer files generated at the time.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [15 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today has been all about the dissertation. After some excellent feedback [on my first draft] I have been working on the next revision. Hopefully this one will hang together and be better balanced in terms of: primary research, secondary, research, the opinions of others, and my own input. Unfortunately formal writing is [as usual] taking a dissproportionate amount of time when compared to the assesment marks on offer. But I guess that is just the way life is when doing something we find hard.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [20 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week has seen a continued effort to finish the dissertation. There is still work to be done on the conclusion, but it is going well and the end is in-sight. In parallel, I have continued to work with the CIRCUARE symbols in the digital domain. There have been many composite images made that convey a coded message using both the monochrome and the colour symbol sets. The colour symbol set has also been used as a basis for a series of more uncertain outcomes, outcomes I describe as static kinetic. I include some sample images made for this series, a series designed to be viewed in a transmissive medium like a computer monitor or digital TV. Some test prints, made with pigment ink on archival matte paper, prove they also print well. They have a different feel in a reflective medium, but it is valid nonetheless. It may be worth considering the investment in a much larger mounted print to see how a significant increase in scale might change the way the image can be read. I am considering a Lambda print mounted on aluminum or dibond. An acrylic face-mount would be ideal, but remains outside my budget. The problem with technology is that it is oh so easy to breach the budget. Affordability and logistics become a very important consideration. Budgets and risk management can put pressure on ambition. I guess financing art production is not a new issue for an artist!... This is the first version to include a conclusion. I also have complete end-notes, illustration references and bibliography. There is still more tweaking to do, but if the deadline were tomorrow, then there would be something of reasonable quality to submit. Relief is the word of the moment...... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [24 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Following a review of progress, I have taken a step back.It became clear that to continue with just 27 codes in my symbol set would be to journey down a blind alley. I had reached a point where having symbols only for alpha and space became just too restrictive. So what to do!After some investigation (via sketching in my journal) I made the decision to add a triangle to my circle and square (this also fits with my dissertation research of Vasarely). Now this may have triggered a trip back to square one and an entirely new journey, where I build a new set of symbols from scratch, a set that could include all three shapes in a single symbol. However, by way of preference, I like to reuse what has gone before, so instead I have decided to add to my symbols already based on circle and square (this also fits with the way new systems are built on the architecture of earlier incarnations). As the circle and square (CIRCUARE) symbols were built using a times 3 principle, it seems logical (and comfortable) to try to use times 3 again. So if CIRCUARE is 1 then I need another 2 sets to make 3.So we already have:CIRCle + sqUARE = CIRCUARETo which I will add:TRIAngle + ciRCLE = TRIARCLESQUAre + triANGLE = SQUANGLEThe naming convention was chosen to reflect the contortions that are often brought to bare in the naming of computer projects or systems, where the hunt for the right TLA, FLA or in this case ELA (eight letter abbreviation) can often appear to be of vital importance! Whatever you (or I) may think of these abbreviations they are a convenient shorthand. This trebling of resources will allow my code symbols to represent 27 x 3 = 81 codes. This will suffice for now and we will see how far I go before this new set becomes too restrictive. This week will be spent working out and recording the new symbols.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [31 January 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This week I started out with the intention of creating the two new symbol sets I mentioned in my last post. As it happens, a line of conversation in a tutorial has set me off on a different path. So, instead of creating those symbols I have been questioning the role of the hand-made in my work. Where is the balance between the idea and the execution. Will I be satisfied with the aesthetic of the entirely machine made output. Can I find my own balance point between hand-made and machine-made. In all of this there is a large element of self doubt too. Maybe this is just my nerves on edge at the realisation that four years of dedicated work is about to come to a head, about to be tested in the spotlight of a final show! The danger is that, while procrastinating over the various arguments raging in my head, I dither and fail to make a decision. To break this deadlock I will try something different. I haven't lifted a paint brush for eighteen months (since my last life class) and so this week I will set-up a canvas and see what feel I get from using paint again. So, this week, I will paint in the college studio during the day and I will create new symbols on the computer in the home studio in the evening. Can I connect the two in some meaningful way?... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [4 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The painting idea didn't get very far. Very early on it became obvious that paint was not the right medium for this line of enquiry (at least not paint and canvas). It was good to experiment, but painting is now off the agenda. On the other hand, the process of deriving the expanded symbol set went very well. The exploration made connections to alternative methods of presentation. I now have a rough idea of the components and organisation I need for the exhibition. I have more experiments to perform in order to prototype the components The symbols are begining to stand-alone, the connection with their original purpose now seems less important. I feel the need for a detailed plan. I sound like an engineer again. I'm not sure if that is positive, negative or just an inevitable consequence of my past - probably the later!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 On Thursday we have a group critique. Apparently this will coincide with a visit from our external examiner, so no pressure there! Between now and then I have our installation room booked. I aim to setup some video test pieces using both a digital photo frame and a computer projector. I have the frame but need to borrow a projector. The college should be able to supply this kit, but you never can be absolutely certain. Despite, or maybe because of my systems engineering background, I am dubious about using technology in the final show - unless I can ensure there are backups available for each and every item. My risk management experience tells me that if something can go wrong it will, so unless backups can be guaranteed then the show will be low tech. Anyway, the installation test this week should help me decide how hard to work toward making the technology available as an integral part of the exhibit. Key dates approaching: group critique 11th February; dissertation deadline 3rd March; deadline for my final show catalogue information 1st March. We have the half term break next week followed by a reading week (where many students are off to Venice, but not I).... With luck this can happen tomorrow and I can hand it in. When it is out of my hands I will then focus 100% on the final project and exhibition. I also sent in my exhibition catalogue information today. The image is generic and should act as a visual clue for anything I might actually exhibit. The installation tests are going well. I like the intimacy of the digital photo frame. My budget will cover a backup frame, so this is one piece of technology that might yet find a place in the exhibition.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [12 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Not been too well the later half of the week, forcing me to miss the group critique. Very unhappy about that, I like to have my say and, more important, listen to what others say. The group critique is also a good way to keep up with what others are doing. The dissertation is bound and ready to hand in next time I am in college. I may go in next week (half term) just to get it out of my hands and safely beyond fiddling with! Next week I will be exploring alternative ways of storing and displaying a large number of images (100 to 500). One method I have used in the past is the Bochner inspired ring binder. I may yet use this method again. It is certainly cost-effective and relevant to the engineering inspired connections of my symbols.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [14 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 A litle experiment with format. Another method of display for the symbols has been simple postcards. This requires a change in format which at least has me questioning the assumption that square is best. I will test rectangular, both portrait and landscape. During half term I may also have another go with canvas and paint. or at least mixed media. I feel like I gave up too quickly on my last attempt. In any case I love to experiment with materials that feel a little uncomfortable to work with. Very little that is creative comes out of working inside the comfort zone. There is much temptation to find and follow an easy route to a final show, but my best work comes from exploration and work at the edge of what I understand and can already do. I must hold my nerve and keep experimenting, keeping faith in my ability to discover something fresh and interesting just-in-time for the exhibition. Put the work in and something good will happen!... A special trip for the ceremonial handing over of the dissertation (there is a receipting system to give me proof of submission). Despite it being half term, my tutor Sarah is happy to accept the work and I am happy for the expected relief of it being beyond my control.... I am walking around like a Cheshire cat!!! Immediately, I picked up a 6B pencil and made some drawings directly onto the studio backing boards. This was another good moment, as I realised there is potential here for displaying symbols on a grand scale, but quite simply and very relevant to a drawing course. There are two close-up images attached here. These are very quick and unrefined so there will be more experimenting in March (after the reading week).... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 February 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today I wrote this in response to a comment made on another forum: "I am in a constant dialogue between digital and analogue, one informing the other. I flip and flop between the two, occasionally they meet in the middle somewhere and create something special. In logic, flip-flops are bistable elements, in my art digital and analogue are more bi-unstable, almost as if there is a self clocking mechanism encouraging constant movement between states and exploration of the space in-between." This simple statement seems to sum-up so much of what my work is about at this moment. The big question is, can I resolve something that will capture this dialogue within an exhibition. This morning I completed the digital domain resolution of the symbols I have been working on. I now have: 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81 monochrome and 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81 colour symbols. (based on the combining of two of three geometric shapes: triangle, circle and square) 27 TRIARCLE monochrome symbols 27 CIRCUARE monochrome symbols 27 SQUANGLE monochrome symbols 27 TRIARCLE colour symbols 27 CIRCUARE colour symbols 27 SQUANGLE colour symbols 162 symbols in all. As per my last post, the next phase involves exploring the analogue potential of these symbols and the scale and materials of analogue production. some strange terms defined: TRIAngle + ciRCLE = TRIARCLE CIRCle + sqUARE = CIRCUARE SQUAre + triaNGLE = SQUANGLE DIgital + anALOGUE = DIALOGUE.  ... With no college (reading week) and the dissertation out of my hands, I relaxed and became hooked on a phrase framed as a challenge (on another site). The challenge was to make work in response to: the alarm kept ringing... I became hooked on the idea of making a purely conceptual piece in the form of a set of instructions written loosely in the style of a computer programme. The outcome was this. || the alarm kept ringing... || | instructions | 01. select an alarm-device;02. load a suitable alarm onto the alarm-device;03. set the alarm-device to sound the alarm;04. select a sound-recording-device;05. set the sound-recording-device to record the sound from the alarm-device;06. start the alarm-device;07. start the sound-recording-device;08. wait one minute;09. stop the sound-recording-device;10. stop the alarm-device;11. select a time-display-device;12. set the time-display-device to the correct time;13. select a sound-recording-playback-device;14. load the alarm recording onto the sound-recording-playback-device;15. set the sound-recording-playback-device to continuous loop;16. select a moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;17. set the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device to observe and record the time-display-device and the sound-recording-playback-device;18. start the time-display-device;19. start the sound-recording-playback-device;20. start the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;21. wait for 24 hours;22. stop the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device;23. stop the sound-recording-playback-device;24. stop the time-display-device;25. select a moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;26. load the moving picture and sound recording onto the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;27. set the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device to continuous loop;28. start the moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device;29. wait forever. | components | alarm-device, sound-recording-device, time-display-device,sound-recording-playback-device, moving-picture-and-sound-recording-device,moving-picture-and-sound-recording-playback-device. | actions | select, load, set, start, wait, stop. || revad, 2010, version rc2 || This is release candidate 2, I went through a process of beta, rc1 and rc2. Unless I find a fault, rc2 will become version 1.0. My only outstanding questions are: Do I follow the instructions and make the physical work? Or, do I leave it and get back to work for the final show? Or, do I change direction and incorporate this idea into my subsequent work? To some extent the questions are rhetorical, as everything I do has an impact on what comes next. Maybe I will make the idea manifest, maybe I won't, but it will impact what comes next - there is no doubt!... I say 'new' but of course this is really another step back into my past, where I used an overhead projector, film and pens during my time as a company training school technical tutor. The thought here is to use the film to provide the ability to overlay ideas and (being in roll form) represent the serial nature of the exploration. I am looking forward to reconnecting with what were once such familiar everyday materials. As I continue my journey, ideas for the final exhibition presentation are beginning to form. So far, I have sketched out and recorded a half dozen strong possibilities None of them are final, but I wouldn't expect that at this stage. The pressure is on to deliver the text and photographs for the exhibition catalogue by next Thursday. No problem there, but agreeing the cover design and general layout is proving a little more problematic. I have to say it is so easy to spend far too much time worrying about such things when any one of a huge range of ideas would quite obviously be fit for purpose. A decision will be taken collectively and another step toward the exhibition will be made.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [12 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 This past week I found myself laying out six short books (40 pages each) based around recording the TRIARCLE, CIRCUARE and SQUANGLE symbols in both monochrome and colour. Books seem to be a natural way of recording and presenting a serial idea. I plan to add these to my self-published series, they will be ready after I have checked the initial batch in about a month. Will they form part of the exhibition, maybe but it is still too early to say for sure. The recent work on potential installations has suggested many possibilities, strengthening confidence that whatever space I have allocated for the exhibition I can adapt my work to fit. So, for now, I can park all thoughts about the final installation and return my focus to exploring and making new work. There are still issues with getting the exhibition catalogue into print. There is little I can do, as it is for others to  deliver their contribution, so I will relax and let things take their natural course.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [16 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I said (last time) that thoughts of installation issues will be pushed into the background in favour of making new work, a good plan I thought, but almost immediately it became obvious that the 'new work' would require decisions about presentation sooner rather than later and certainly before making 80+ A4 drawings. Actually it is more like 240+ as each drawing will have a minimum of three layers. The idea is to create a dialogue between my analogue and digital work and for this I need to consider how this dialogue might be displayed. This week's exploration is therefore centred around materials that can be used in overlaying one image on another and how these might be presented in a gallery environment. The books are in print. I can't wait to have them in my hands, to find out if they work as 3D objects rather than the 2D virtual constructs I made on the computer. The timetable for the final exhibition is starting to come together and it looks like the private view will be the evening of 9th June, still to be confirmed, so watch this space (should you be at all interested!).... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 An excellent few days! After two very good tutorials (we have two tutors for this final module), I am convinced my ideas are progressing in the right direction. The testing of overlays went well and I have planned more detailed experiments to confirm the exact approach. Yesterday there was room to test the screen installation for the first time and this allowed several issues to come to the surface. Some key words are: lighting, reflection, cabling, power, position, mounting, surface, relationship, logic and emotion. I have agreed to build a model of the installation and this coupled with further component experiments will inform decision making before commencing on the full size build and further refinement in April. More materials were ordered, my budget still looks about right and I still have a contingency for the unexpected. We also did some group work on our artist statements. This was fun and a good excuse to get together as a group. A chance to relax - just a little. [EDIT] In one exercise we had to fill the [BLANK] in this statement with an appropriate verb: I [BLANK] drawing(s). It was suggested that I worry drawings, but I thought that I argue drawings was more appropriate for me and a little less scary too! An excellent few days!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [25 March 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today was a group critique day. Such days are a good opportunity to test how my own work might be received and to see what others have been up to. The supportive and positive environment can also help us all through the more vulnerable moments when self-doubt creeps in. I like group critiques! I installed and presented the CIRCUARE components in a new way, a way that is a strong candidate for inclusion in my final show installation. The feedback was positive, confirming some of the decisions I had already made and raising one or two new ideas and opportunities. It was great to see how the others are progressing and have the opportunity to encourage and support what they are doing. A very enjoyable day. This week I took delivery of two more LCD panels, making three in all. I am working on a full proposal for next week, if this is agreed I can then push on and build the full installation in the studio starting immediately after the Easter break. Taking the time to pre-build the installation will allow all risks to be assessed and each detail to be checked and confirmed. The plan is to make the installation week as stress free as possible.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [1 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 No college this week - due to my being ill. I'm still recovering, so all I can do is think about what to do next. The college is also closed for Easter for two weeks, so it will be well into April by the time I next visit the studio. When I am feeling well again it will be time to concentrate on the video based kinetic elements of the installation. I have them in my head, but there will only be certainty once they are made and installed. I have asked to do a full test install in the college studio in April. If this is not possible then risk management suggests I will have to persue a slightly less ambitious backup plan. So mid-April is an important decision point.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [4 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I still have a fuzzy head from being ill this past week, but needs must and I have to get back into the groove sooner rather than later, so today has been about clearing out the home studio (spare room) in order to make space to work while the college is closed. The hope is that clearing the studio will help clear the head. Then I plan to complete the 54 outstanding A4 components for the outer skin of my installation (before I return to college in two weeks time - there are 81 components in all). I also want to (at least) start story-boarding the three animation components and if I am lucky even finish a version 1.0 of one of them. The question is can I get my head clear enough to make progress! PS. Finding my name and blogger profile mentioned in this months a-n magazine (bottom of p38) brought a smile to my face and a welcome happy end to an otherwise bad week!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [7 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Are you all aware of how good gaffer tape is at removing paint from walls? The spare room now has one wall that is almost paint free plaster. I had hung a large sheet of Fabriano paper and left it for a few hours, upon my return I found the paper on the floor and a large strip of the paint from the wall too. Thirty plus years of layered paint had peeled away, probably a testament to the first layer having been applied to a still damp top layer of plaster all those years ago when the house was built in the '70s. Still, never mind, the process of removing the loose paint was rather therapeutic and enjoyable. Getting back to the paper, I was hanging it so as to work on some analogue components made using paper, graphite, permanent marker pen and a sealing layer of acrylic wash. The idea is to continue experimenting while I make the already planned components for the show installation. You never quite know when something new jumps out and demands to be included or at least explored further. Also, I hadn't realised (until now) how electric that jumper is :O)... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 After a bad week or so, today has been very productive, maybe this has something to do with the beautiful sunny weather! Ten solid hours of work (three last evening and seven today) and another set of twenty seven installation images have been made, making fifty four finished and twenty seven to go. Colour has now become part of the outcome, moving the process one step closer to the kinetic video components that will appear on the inner surface of the installation. I can concentrate on these video components when the outer skin components are done. So twenty seven images and ten hours (work time) from now and I can switch modes. I have an idea that might include mirrors on the inner surface of the installation pod, but this will have to wait for experimentation once I have the basic structure of the pod built in the college studio. The idea is to 'overlay' the kinetic components on the viewer via repeated reflection. This could change the video content so I need to make the initial experiments as soon as I get back to college. Notes The picture shows one of three strips of nine images made today. I italicised video because I really don't see these components as videos, I prefer to think of them as sequences of codes presented with varying levels of certainty and uncertainty. Video just doesn't seem to be the right word, but it will suffice for now - once italicised.  ... This experimental work is a precursor to the production of full kinetic sequences for the LCD screens in my final installation.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [13 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today I have been considering these related questions. 1. When does the virtual take over from the physical? 2. Do I see the virtual as simply another way of promoting my physical practice? I am begriming to consider my virtual practice as being the primary practice which is then punctuated by related physical activity. Certainly many of my serial explorations can be (and have been) realised in the virtual on-line world, so where does that leave my physical practice? For now, I plan to continue exploring both and let time and experience dictate how things unfold. My virtual practice can be found via an ever expanding number of links, with work located (hosted) in different countries around the globe. For now (at least) my virtual audience is likely to remain much larger and diverse than any physical audience an undergraduate or recent graduate could hope to muster, so for now it represents the most important part of my artistic presence. One final question comes to mind: how can I (or even should I) incorporate the virtual into the physical final show?... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [15 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I have been putting off making the final 27 components for the installation 'skin', these must be finished before I go back to college on Tuesday. I must also make a model of the installation, so lots to do over the next few days. It is quite difficult to resist making more changes. I enjoy the exploration so much more than making the final outcome, so it can be hard to pin down what that outcome might be. Usually it might be lots of things and the final thing appears as time runs out and not a moment before.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [15 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Another day is almost done and I have, once again, managed to avoid completing the skin components. I wonder, am I trying to tell myself something! On the other hand the virtual web components are close to completion. Maybe I will do the physical work tomorrow...... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [16 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Success, all 81 components for the installation skin are now complete and in the box (quite literally in a storage box for safe-keeping). I will be doing a test install of the complete set, probably first in the home studio and then the college studio, next week. I'll post some pictures when I have them. In the mean-time I can move on and refocus on the kinetic screen based components for the inner surface of the pod. In parallel I must do a scale model, so I can change various aspects quickly and check out different configurations. I wonder how the other students have spent their time over the Easter break, it will be good to touch base on Tuesday.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today has been about two tasks: - first, getting ready for tomorrow's return to college; - second, making my first model of the proposed exhibition installation. Getting ready for college was simply a matter of collecting everything together, all the work done over the Easter break, and packing it up to make transportation as easy as possible. Making the model was the most fun, I have made it adaptable to allow for easy modification to show several different potential outcomes (on the same basic theme). It is not quite finished, so no photographs yet, you will have to be patient and wait a day or two! I can't wait to hear what the other students have been up-to. Of course it may be that one or two haven't made it back to the UK because of the volcanic ash from Eyjafjallajökull.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [20 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I enjoyed a good tutorial today where my plans for the exhibition were finalised and agreed. There was also the opportunity to hange the TRIARCLE and SQUANGLE components for the first time (pictures attached).... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [20 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The first model of the installation is finished and photographed (shots taken in my studio space). You should be able to upscale the model by referring to the test installation photographs in earlier shots. Keep in-mind that each panel is 2.4 x 1.2 metres. Making the model has allowed some ideas to be confirmed and others to be modified. It has been a very useful exercise and there may be a second model to try out other ideas. These may not be used, but even so, they will provide extra backup material for the assessment.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [21 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I had a brief abortive visit to college today, the planned contextual studies session was cancelled, so I returned home to spend time on updating my journal (following yesterday's tutorial) and beginning to plan the kinetic screen based components. I have had these in my head for some while now and it is about time I did some work on them and made them real - in a virtual sense of course. A combination of still not being 100% well, an unnecessary journey and the increasing pressure (as we move into the final critical stages) turned me into a ratty a**e today. Hopefully my e-mailed apology to the group will be accepted. I hate being Mr. negative (I really do), but sometimes, when your head is not 100% clear, it is very hard to express a problem (seen) in wholly constructive terms. The good news from the model making is that it has given me confidence that everything will hang together and work as one. So much so, I have decided not to make a full-size test installation in the studio. Instead, I will spend more time on getting the components just right and ready for the exhibition installation process.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [23 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 In my last post I used the word 'confidence', this was a bad idea as ever since I have been mulling through all the concepts and outcomes I could of, or (maybe) should have pursued. Thirty six hours later and I am having trouble refocusing on the intended outcome. Today I will have to do something to clear my head and rid myself of (what must be) last-minute nerves. There is just too much work left to allow this confusion to continue for very long!  ... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [23 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 It's wonderful how public confession can clear the mind. Since writing my previous post I have managed to regain focus by working on alternative installation layouts on the scale model. A little encouragement from a friendly fellow blogger is also worthy of mention. A timely few words can be oh so helpful - thank you Carolyn! As you can see here, I now have four more sets of photographs to ponder and help me decide on what to do next. I'll probably pick two layouts and work on the graphite hand drawn components alongside editing the digital computer aided kinetic movies. I still have one or two mad ideas brewing in the background, these may influence the final outcome, but I won't let them destroy what I already have.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [24 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 After sleeping on it, this is the current favoured layout. I now need to go buy the boards for the graphite drawings and model the power feed requirements for the three screens.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [26 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Picking up on the comment discussion from an earlier post (#44).The really mad idea was to replace my entire installation with one poster connecting to ('advertising') my web installations. I have analysed the artistic truth of this approach and, on balance, rejected the thought - for now! I have no real concerns about what comes after (post graduation), as my situation will allow me to continue following my own agenda. When I have all the components for the installation ready, I will be able to relax a little and focus on the logistics and exhibition site installation issues. Of course, it doesn't help the nerves knowing that - when it comes to degree exhibitions - my college has a nomadic existence, so as yet the venue remains unconfirmed. But, we have a week to install, which should be sufficient. For now it is back to video editing this week.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [28 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Yesterday we had a session designed to allow us (third years) to give the second years the benefit of our experience - as they start out on the task of writing their dissertation. We spent a full ninety minutes recalling how we felt a year ago and what, why and how we approached the task. It wasn't all one way traffic, I found the session a really useful way of crystallising my own thoughts about how my practice has developed and the relationship that practice has with the formal writing of the dissertation. This week has been about making the hand-drawn hand-made components for the internal skin of my installation pod. The first of three such components is 90% complete and has confirmed the approach. I will now commence construction of the other two. The kinetic components have also been progressed, although somewhat less so than planned. Now I have everything under control, progress should be swift (famous last words maybe). Today, we have a workshop designed to help us finish our personal statements. This seems to be considered important, despite there being absolutely no mention of personal statements in the unit or course assessment briefs. Given all the practice I have had in describing my practice and work through this blog and other web sites, I guess this shouldn't be too difficult a task. There is also a lunch time meeting to finalise the show catalogue, making for a full and very busy day ahead.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [30 April 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 One of my added contributions to the wider degree show project is to sponsor, design and curate an artist led independent virtual record of the physical exhibition. Today I have started to build this site. Rather as I would build a blog, this site will be constructed in public over the next month. Each artist in the group will have a page where they can display an image and associated text about their degree exhibition art. Then, once the exhibition is ready for public viewing, I will take photographs and add these to the site to act as a virtual record of the show. You can view the site at http://11degrees.co.uk. On Wednesday we had a very interesting group session designed to help us create our artist statements. Despite early misgivings - I enjoyed this very much and found it a very useful and helpful exercise. Thanks to Sarah (our contextual studies tutor) for her considerable efforts to make this an interesting as opposed to stressful task. I have now completed two out of three hand-made hand-drawn components for the internal skin of my installation. I am thoroughly enjoying the physical aspect of making these important components and take great pleasure from how this enjoyment manifests in the outcome. The kinetic video based screen components are very close to completion and I hope to be in position to do a rough test install of everything next week.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [1 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today, I woke up and decided to write (in this blog) about the kinetic video components of my degree show installation, but then the mail dropped through the letter box. There, on the hall floor, I found the May 2010 an magazine and the 2010 Degrees supplement and on page six a half page spread with an extract from my blogger profile and a quarter page image of my de : co-od-de work. FANTASTIC! So, today, all thought of kinetic video components will have to wait while I enjoy my moment in the spotlight. Thank you so much an and Richard Taylor in particular. And congratulations to my fellow featured bloggers too. PS. What a great way to celebrate my 50th blog post - and what a coincidence too!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [3 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The third of three hand-made hand-drawn components is now complete. Now I can concentrate on finishing the kinetic video components. That will be the main creative task for this week. We have another artist statement session on Wednesday and I have some work to do for that. I have many disparate bits of information that I need to pull together - in a creative way - to act as an overview of my work and practice. On Thursday we get to visit our exhibition space for the first time and start the process of allocating space and planning the layout. Also for Wednesday, I need a second image for the catalogue as it seems we are now having four pages each rather than two. Looking forward - completing the videos this week will allow for a full week (next week) to test out the installation and solve any issues that arise. The likely problem area will be the power supply, wiring for the three screens, and how to integrate this into the installation. Should it be hidden or displayed and made part of the work? As you can see, at this stage it is all about finishing off the many small tasks in order to deliver the finished products. All about hanging on in there in order to reach the finishing line.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [4 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The college studio was deserted today, with everyone out and about making preparations for the exhibition (I guess). This solitude gave me space to think and, almost without thinking, I found myself mapping out my installation on the studio boards as a full size drawing. My materials were: the studio boards, ink-jet print, masking tape, foam board, and marker pen. Photographs of this drawing will act as food-for-thought prior to testing the real components in situ next week. I also took the opportunity to lay out the hand drawn components side-by-side to photograph them for my journal. I am really pleased with the subtlety of marks I have found by experimenting with the process. The humble putty rubber has become a dear and valued friend. I'm back in the home studio now preparing material for tomorrow's contextual studies session on artist statements. I have some concrete poetry and visual aids in mind. PS. It did cross my mind that the full size drawing could be the final work, it could replace the installation. I will give this some thought. Can I win the argument with myself. I argue drawings.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [5 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 My ideas for the statement seemed to go down well. There is more work to do over the next week (or so) to refine the selection and use of key words and the presentation. I want to make my statement more than just words on a page and intend to try out two different ideas before selecting the final format. I say 'final' but of course the statement will remain a living thing to be revisited on a regular basis to ensure it stays in-line with my practice. We are visiting the exhibition venue tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon to measure up and discuss (argue) the floor plan. There really shouldn't be a problem with space, we are about half the number of last years third year, but I will be surprised if we have eleven totally happy students without a little bit of heated (artistic) discussion. Friday will be my first video editing day - I will probably need a whole day for each of three videos, so this will stretch on into next week. Next week is also about test installations in the college studio. One distraction will be the T20 cricket. With England through to the super eights I have at least three more evenings relaxing (I wish) watching the England matches.... I'm sure there will be a tweak or two required, but the basics should remain the same. So, at last, I can focus on the animated video components for the three screens in my installation. Except of course I can't. There is the small matter of an artist statement to finish too. This pesky unavoidable requirement seems to demand a much greater investment in time than I am inclined to give. Maybe, I just need to collect all the elements I already have and present them in one place. That idea popped into my head as I typed this blog post. One of the major benefits of blogging (I have found) is the way writing for public consumption can encourage clearer thinking. If not clearer writing! Right. I have decided that the animations take priority over the statement, so 100% effort will be focused on the animations this weekend. My new business cards arrived today. I say business cards but, thanks to moo.com, they are really miniature works of art with contact details on the back. This latest batch have images representing the six related symbol sets associated with TRIARCLE, CIRCUARE and SQUANGLE. I am gradually building a portfolio of miniature art using a business card wallet as the storage device. I have been searching for a supplier of white mains leads for the screen power supplies and was succesful yesterday. This will allow me to make a statement with the power wiring to the screens by keeping it in full view rather than hidden away. There is a twist to this idea that will become clear in the installation. Now, I must focus on those animations. I really must. Really I must!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [8 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Working well past midnight, I now have more work than I bargained for, because last night's first test video didn't go as well as I would have liked. It feels jumpy and disconnected, when I was after smooth but uncertain. There is a fine line here between success and abject failure. These components are very risky, but I must continue to explore right up to the final moment. I have a risk management plan in place, should things remain unresolved, but that is very much a last resort. So I will keep experimenting and refining until I have something worthy of the rest of the installation.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [9 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 After a long day yesterday I have three finished videos. I may yet change them but, I need to live with these on-display for a few days. They are very simple and they appear to give the smooth but uncertain quality I have been after. I'll let time tell me if they are right. In the mean-time I will continue to explore other possibilities. The need to display all three videos forced me to set-up the three digital photo frames (purchased for the installation), which is just as well when I immediately discovered significant firmware differences between them. Despite being the exact same model, only the one (I purchased first) has the facility to auto play a movie from power-on. The two extra screens (purchased at a later date) require the movie to be manually started via a menu system. This is most disappointing and will make life a little less certain during the exhibition. If the power should be turned off for any reason, then someone will have to manually restart the videos (well two out of the three that is). This is a typical systems issue and I will just have to find a reliable colleague to keep an eye on the screens when I am not there. There was also an issue regarding the highly reflective acrylic sheet placed in-front of the LCD panel - rather as a glass or acrylic sheet is placed in front of a framed print. This feature caused far too many unwanted reflections and a significant distraction to viewing the work. Fortunately, after exploring the construction of the photo frames, it became clear (!) that this sheet can be removed exposing a much less reflective surface to the actual LCD panel. So, yesterday became a day when one potential problem was balanced by another positive discovery.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [11 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Today has been all about refining an artist statement ready for a contextual studies group session tomorrow. I have produced mine as a tripple DL folded pamphlet. That's an A4 page folded in three sections to give the standard DL 99x210 mm result. It is printed on both sides with the statement on the inner side and title, artwork and contact details on the outer side. Although, the second fold makes one outer surface (contact details) become an inner surface! Much more difficult to describe than it is to make. I also have a PDF version for the web and will be sharing this as soon as I have had the pamphlet proof read. Probably after tomorrow's group session. Of course when I say 'statement' I don't mean just a statement. I'll give you a clue by sharing the sections: IN THE BEGINNING STATEMENT CONNECTIONS FEEDBACK EQUATIONS ACTIONS AT THE END The FEEDBACK section contains a quote from Richard Taylor - taken from my a-n Blogger Profile. Another task for tomorrow is a trip to B&Q to pick up the final bits of hardware necessary to construct my installation (screws, cable ties, that sort of thing). After tomorrow, I will be spending the next few days reviewing the totality of work produced for this module and then thinning it out to ensure there is an appropriate focus. But more about that later.... We had a final meeting to approve the catalogue proof, so hopefully this will now go to print. I haven't managed to visit B&Q. Maybe tomorrow.... With thanks to Richard Taylor for a fabulous and highly relevant quote taken from my Blogger Profile interview. So another task bites the dust and I can now concentrate 100% on the exhibition build issues.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [13 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Continuing to collate and filter the support work for the unit assessment. Tweaking the videos to ensure the three, when viewed in the installation space, interact and communicate as I would wish. Taking a break from late afternoon to watch England's T20 World Cup match with Sri Lanka. Watching second practice for the Monaco F1 GP as I write this. So now you know my two favourite sports! I have a final test install planned for the college studio next Tuesday and we start to prepare for the exhibition build next Wednesday by readying the gallery boards. Lots of sanding and painting I believe. Apparently, off the back of the a-n Magazine 2010 Degrees feature, I am going to appear in the college's local and national press releases for the Swindon College School of Art Degree shows. I'll post details when I have them.... To record these thoughts I have started a new Artists Talking blog at: http://www.a-n.co.uk/link/revad For now this is titled: Beyond Graduation with a subtitle of: U N D E R C O N S T R U C T I O N I am certain things will begin to change rapidly as the degree show passes into history.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [16 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Yesterday I tweaked the artist statement. I changed just a single word, but to my mind, it has made a significant difference. If you have already read version 1.0 then you should be able to find the changed word in version 1.1. I have also tweaked the videos, if "tweaked" is the right word when the duration has gone from one minute each to 2.5, 2.75 and 3 minutes. The variation in duration is to ensure a more random feel between the three. The much extended length slows down the pace of change. I have reached the dangerous stage where the temptation is to keep tweaking, changing and fiddling, but like a painter, it would be all too easy to destroy what has already been achieved. It is time to stop and focus on the build of the exhibit. Fortunately we can get started on that task this Wednesday. I think today will be about relaxation. A good walk this morning and then sit down and enjoy the Monaco GP followed by the T20 World Cup final -  a mini ashes!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [17 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 Enjoyable GP and fantastic T20. It is always a pleasure to see us beat the old enemy! Relaxation day over. Now back to preparing for the unit assessment. Today's major task is to photograph every page of every journal. I hate letting the journals out of my possession, they are the most important element of my work. The photographs act as a safety record - just in-case the worse should happen!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [18 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The journals have been photographed. Only a half hour for a couple of hundred pages. 1. Focus2. Click3. Turn Page4. Focus5. Click6. Focus7. Click8. Turn Page 9. Repeat 4 to 8 until journal end. 10. Repeat for second and subsequent journals. 11. Backup images to PC and then to backup drives. The wonder of digital photography and image stabilisation! Cross referencing and making a contents mind-map will take a bit longer - probably a day or so. I'm about half way through that, so it should be done this week some time. I manged to visit B&Q today and now have the hardware required to hang the installation work: screws, rods and brackets. I forgot the Velcro for fixing the power blocks to the gallery boards, but I can pick that up tomorrow. Gallery board prep is under way with a handful of people sanding and painting today. Apparently the big push will begin tomorrow. This is mainly a first and second year task, but I plan to pop in and lend a hand anyway.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [19 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 A few more hours and the support work will be catalogued and ready for submission. All that will be left (to do) will be the installation in the exhibition space. I believe that I have all the issues, real and imagined, under control, but there is no certainty until it is done. Maybe this is the worse time, everything is ready but there is the wait for the space to become available. There is not much I can do except start to work on what comes after the show. Already my mind has moved on even if, in the physical world, there are four more weeks before the show is over. Four more weeks and four years of focused work will be done!... I already have a plan in place to reduce the screens from three to one. As I collect all the components together the erasings (erased drawings or graphite stained works) have become much more important. So, the first in-situ build will be for one screen and three erasings on the internal surface. Then I will step back and contemplate (probably overnight) before deciding if the two extra screens are required. At the moment, I suspect not. The exhibition build starts on Monday when our good people from the facilities unit install the gallery boards. Then on Wednesday we get to check them out and repair any transport damage and tape and paint the joints (not required in my case). The schedule then allows us to start installing work from Tuesday 4th June, giving us four days plus (maybe) the weekend if absolutely necessary. Assessment starts on the 7th and finishes with the private view on the evening of the 9th. We have to be available all-day on the 9th just in-case the external examiner needs to speak to us individually (there is usually a small sample). Am I missing something! Everything feels far too smooth. Could it be my meticulous planning has worked, or is there something lurking in the background ready to bite hard. Time will tell I guess.... I have roughed out the journal content and references page that I always place in the back of each journal. The theory is that this makes the tutors life a little easier during the assessment process. Every little helps... Everything is then geared up to begin the install on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to seeing all the gallery boards in-place and checking to see if they divide the space into appropriate places to display our work. The excitement is building!... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [24 May 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I have just completed my second pass through the unit of work. One more should do the trick and complete the job of indexing and cross-referencing my unit submission. I plan to do that this afternoon, giving me tomorrow as a rest day before the exhibition build begins on Wednesday. Our private view is on the 9th June and the assessment is made on the 7th, 8th and 9th, so the 9th is the end of the road. Everything beyond that is just a side-effect of taking the degree: public exhibition, show dismantle, clearing the studio, waiting for the assessment feedback and results day (22nd June), the assessment feedback and results day and the graduation ceremony are all necessary evils. Just maybe I could leave public exhibition out of that list of evils, but I remain unconvinced that such exhibitions are the way my art will develop, so it is in (the list) for now! *** A short teaser video from one possible kinetic component for the exhibition. I am leaving the final decision on which kinetic components to use until the very last moment when everything else is installed. The external surface of the installation may be entirely logical, but the internal surface is driven by my own emotional response to the unit of work that is the final major project.... So is the other support work - mainly books. One last thing to add to the journals will be photographs of the final installation when it is built. We had a message late yesterday that the venue will not be ready for us to start our part of the build until Thursday, giving an impromptu extra day off. I think some much needed gardening is in order. I will commence battle with the ever invading ground elder later this morning.... The day in the garden made for great relaxation. I managed to forget about the degree show and assessment for a couple of hours. I now have all the hardware required to mount my work in the exhibition. All the work is ready too. The final step, before installation, will be to finish the preparation of the gallery boards. This is now scheduled for tomorrow. So everything is on-time and I should be installing the work from next Tuesday. In just 14 days I will be hanging around waiting for a call to talk to the external examiner and looking forward to the evening private view and a huge sigh of relief!... Everything is installed and could now be left as-is. A couple of minor tweaks to do just to satisfy myself really. These are planned for tomorrow and then Friday I hand over the support work so the assessment can begin bright and early on Monday. So that leaves four days rest before we have to be available to meet the external examiner on Wednesday before the Private View Wednesday evening. A side job for tomorrow is to document the installed installation to occupy the last few pages of my last BA journal. All-in-all it is quite a strange feeling to realise how close the finishing line now is. No more pictures until I take the official 11degrees.co.uk record next week.... A quick trip to B&Q this morning where I sourced the final few components to realise the 'tweaks' I mentioned yesterday. A couple of hours later and all was done. I liken this stage of the installation to the snagging of a new build house - it takes a lot longer than you think - you need time to reflect on what you already have and what it might yet become. My advice for all first time exhibitors is: take the very earliest opportunity to get your work on-site and then spend time living with the space and working out how to best utilise it. Give yourself time to reflect and adjust. Having finished my install (by lunch time) I turned myself over as a helper for one of my colleagues. It seems my height is invaluable when it comes to positioning work! I was very happy to oblige. Tonight I am taking one final pass through the journals and support work while adding some reflective thoughts on the exhibition installation. From tomorrow noon it is all out of my hands (for assessment) until Wednesday and the final couple of hours before the Private View. I am excited..!... My exhibit is ready and the support work has been handed in. To do. - Chase people to volunteer for the invigilator rota. - Collect and collate special instructions for the invigilators to allow them to turn on (and off) any specialist equipment. - Organise a list of work in the show. I'm not sure how it happens that I have all these tasks, maybe I should invite others to contribute! Finally I must mentally prepare myself to speak to the external examiner - if called upon to do so Wednesday afternoon. I will manage to relax a bit by watching the test match over the weekend.   PS. I have since managed to raise some help with these final tasks.... Getting a completely filled invigilator rota is like drawing blood from a stone. I'll keep at them until Wednesday and then just be happy to have done my bit to smooth the way.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [6 June 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 The exhibition invigilator rota has been posted (via email) for all students to see. Seven willing volunteers who have the sessions they asked for and four nil returns who have been allocated sessions on a random basis (which no doubt will come as a surprise to them at some point). Everyone now has responsibility for either attending their allocated sessions or providing a replacement (via a swap or a substitute). That should be my last group task out of the way leaving me to focus on where to install business cards and an artist statement. I don't want them on or near the work as they would interfere with a very carefully considered and constructed aesthetic. I have two days to create a solution.... A business card holder is part of the statement installation. I say 'business' card but these cards are business card on one side and art card on the other with six different works related to the installation. They are in effect miniature, highly collectible works. I also have a stack of statements in DL trifold pamphlet format that will be available on a first-come first-served basis. So just one thing left to do - be ready for a chat with the external examiner if called. I am now relaxed and looking forward to the private view Wednesday evening.... Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 [10 June 2010] http://www.a-n.co.uk/degrees_unedited/projects/single/592738 I had an interesting discussion with the external examiner. Reading between the lines his main motivation for asking me in was that he had not seen my work before (I was not in college when he visited earlier in the year). I have to admit that I felt a whole lot less nervous after the discussion than I did before. The Private View went very well. Typically (I guess) the vast majority of the audience were connected with the various courses displaying work. Even so, there were a number of good opportunities to discus my installation with interested parties and many art/business cards were given out. All very enjoyable if a little tiring toward the end of the evening. Before the audience arrived I managed to get some final shots of the installation. There is a small montage attached in the usual way plus this larger version hosted on the 11degrees.co.uk web site. (click here to open the larger jpeg in a new tab or browser window)... All that is left is the take-down starting at 4pm on Monday and then the wait for results (due a week today). Relaxation is begining to kick in!... All that is left is the tidy up and the receipt of assessment marks and grades. Given the amount of dedication and effort made over the past four years (foundation and degree) I am amazed at the energy levels I still have. This next period of transition is both scary and exciting and will remain so - at least until the next project is defined and I find myself buried in the research and realisation of new work. For now I satisfy myself by tidying up lose ends and finishing off the degree with an appropriate record to be published at revad.com and codedimages.com. One final issue will be how to round off this blog. I'll be giving that some thought over the coming days.... Excellent planning and execution even if I do say so myself. When I arrived at the venue there was a letter waiting to explain that, despite earlier assertions of results this week, the reality is we won't receive them until after the Standing Committee of the University of Bath meets on 14th July. So at least a month to wait then. Oh well time to get on with life. No point in looking back, the outcome will be what it will be. Time for one last video before I close this blog. It has been a year of adjustment and continued exploration. A year of trying things to see where they might lead. Much new work has been made with some of it based upon my foundation cyphers of TRIARCLE, CIRCUARE and SQUANGLE. Today I take a look back at http://codedimages.com/   Many of my experiments have been recorded in my other a-n blog at http://www.a-n.co.uk/link/beyond. And, of course, you can always find links to my work at http://revad.com.   Later this week, I am looking forward to attending this year's graduate exhibition for Swindon College. It will be intriguing to see what this year's undergraduates have delivered by way of a show. And, in a way, it will confirm my own determination to move on to the next stage....
