BA(Hons) Three Dimentional Design - Ceramics
I'm a third year student working towards my degree show. I am interested in the transience of materials and the relationship between order and chaos. I'm currently making precise ceramic vessels then subjecting them to processes that either alter their form or result in their destruction, always opting for processes which are a step removed from my own hand,. The outcome of this work can result in the remains of the object or a record of the destruction process, e.g. film or photography.

'Flour Pot', Flour. For these vessels I used slip-casting techniques but used a mixture of flour and water instead of slip. I then fired (or baked) them in the kiln at 200ºC, this caused the cracking and distortion, It also made the kiln room smell like a bakery, mmm...

Ceramic, Resin, Wood. I high cast these vessels thinly and then fired them to 1260 degrees. the high temperature caused the forms to distort. I am currently experimenting with ways to increase the distortion.I dripped coloured resin through the holes in the vessels, I am interested in the amalgamation of these two very different materials and emphasising the properties of each.

'Kate Boccaccini Meadows', Ceramic. This piece is a bit of an off shoot from my usual type of work. It's made from slip combined with molocite and sawdust, and then coloured with cobalt. I'm not sure what it is or where this work is leading but I like the object.

These are some images of my work, so far, taken in preparation for New Designers in July. each of the objects are test pieces and I am trying to decide which to develop further... difficult decisions.

err... what was left
# 3 [2 April 2010]
A few months ago I put a rock (I think it was limestone) into a kiln with a clay tile attached to it, to see if I could make the tile fuse to the rock. when I took the rock out, the tile (not surprisingly) fell off. I thought that maybe I could use some glaze to attach the tile, so I took it to the glaze room poured on some glaze and then went to wash my glaze pot out. when I turned back to the rock it had begun to steam and hiss and cracks were quickly forming all over it. after about a minute of this I was left with a tile and a pile of dust. so much for my tile-rock combo...
but anyway I thought that this reaction was probably more interesting so I began experimenting with casting powdered limestone into the clay-body, firing and adding water. These are the results...
