From theory to practice
As Interface Editor I recently worked with 60 Art History BA students from Goldsmiths, University of London, on a review writing workshop.
The afternoon consisted of a lecture which put forward several approaches fostered by contemporary commentators on the idea of being critical. This was followed by discussion of texts by Matthew Goulish and JJ Charlesworth which had been distributed to the students the previous week. I followed this with a short presentation focusing on the practicalities of writing a review, offering some guidelines around what the students should attempt to include in their reviews. The students broke away into smaller groups to discuss what they found exciting and what they found worrying about the prospect of writing a review, these ideas were then used as a basis of a whole group discussion.
Students were given two weeks to visit and review an exhibition of their choice, they received feedback on the resulting reviews and were encouraged to upload them to Interface.
Here are some of the reviews that resulted from this project
