About cookies
Cookies are small pieces of information that on request from a website are stored by your computer on your computer's hard disk. Cookies are used by websites to keep track of the user in some way. This can be used for both innocuous and intrusive purposes. Modern browsers all have functions that can control cookies.
How does a-n use cookies?
Cookies used by a-n's websites are used in the following ways:
- a-n.co.uk - anlogin: This is created when you login and disappears when you either logout or end your session in your browser. This keeps track of your authenication allowing you to view all the subscriber only parts of the site. If you are using a public computer remember to Logout or exit your browser to prevent the next user from assuming your authentication.
- a-n.co.uk - __utmc, __utmb, __utma, __itmz : These are all associated with Google analytics providing statistical information about how our site is being used which helps us fine tune the websites content and functions.
- itool.co.uk - _ziToolkitvis, ziToolkitTutID: If login to one of our interactive toolkits on www.itool.co.uk site two cookies are set. _ziToolkitvis checks whether you have registered and allows you to save and uniquely retrieve data you have entered. ziToolkitTutID identifies which toolkit you are working on. Both expire within a twenty minutes of inactivity in the site or when you logout.
Cookies may change as the sites are developed.
How to find and control your cookies
If you're using Netscape 6.0:
- On your Task Bar, click:
- Edit, then
- Preferences
- Click on Advanced
- Click on Cookies
If you're using Internet Explorer 6.0:
- Choose Tools, then Internet Options
- Click the Privacy Tab
- Click on Custom Level
- Click on the 'Advanced' button
- Check the 'override automatic cookie handing' box and select Accept, Block or Prompt for action as appropriate.
If you're using Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5:
- Choose Tools, then
- Internet Options
- Click the Security tab
- Click on Custom Level
- Scroll down to the sixth option to see how cookies are handled by IE5 and change to Accept, Disable, or Prompt for action as appropriate.
If you're using Firefox:
- Choose Tools, then
- Options
- Click the Privacy tab
- Click on Cookies
