it’s quite lovely to get a recommendation from a friend of a show to go and see, especially when that show is a walk from where i live.  on my way to pickfords house in derby my route took me past some newly created car parks and a clutch centre building painstakingly being taken down for the new inner ring road development.  how many conversations have there been to get to this condition i wondered.  i’ll never know as those conversations and dialogues happen behind closed doors and oh i would like to know what other topics get talked about too.

my arrival at pickfords house was greeted by a very smiley security man and school children workshops, one of which seemed to be about the blitz.  i’ve been to the museum before and again it’s undiscovered nature and a friendly welcoming atmosphere was as i had left it.  not often i feel comfortable upon entering a building with public access.

the exhibition i had come to see is situated on the top floor, which is nice as there are other jewels to discover along the ascension or alternatively allowing for interruption or contemplativeness upon returning to the ground floor.  my friend had gone all wavey handed when talking about what was on show.  i walked into a room with cabinets and frames on the walls.  the scale of the objects certainly allowed for a very personal intervention with the work.  visual curiosity backed up by succinct words of description.  the room is bathed in quietness, allowing for inner narrative to wend.

i lost myself in the physical form of the objects and further added to my visual joy by reading the supplied information.  the collection was suited to a museum display context, especially one as friendly as pickfords house in derby. 

with hidden narrative around me on my walk to see the work, how lovely that my conversation with the work was inclusive and personal, yet shared as i kept wanting to beckon to look and share and compare.  the exhibition of work by claire benson and amy nightingale continues until 28th june.  i’m pleased i got there in time to see it all.

Writer detail:

my experiemental practice began while studying fine art at the university of derby.  during the period of study a test revealed that i struggle to process both written and spoken word and will experience difficulty in expressing myself in spoken and written forms, in other words, i am dsylexic, which is awkward as i appear to be articulate and able to express myself.
the a-n site will be a place for developmental thinking and writing and recording instances of cake eating, while attempting to develop my practice and hold onto some sanity about how i can achieve money to pay the bills.
