Measure and Purpose is an intriguing exhibition that combines a series of different materials such as ceramics, painting and technical displays. It engages with the concepts of pseudo-scientific study and the human drive to integrate with nature. Kate Brigden and Pippa Getty's exhibition forms a synthesis of these ideas. Brigden's work highlights the scientific way of viewing the world where everything has to be explained or ordered. In contrast, Getty's work draws parallels between her own artistic discovery and that of an explorer, therefore engaging with a natural human drive to integrate with nature.

 

The dim lighting creates a mystifying effect, as the exhibits are lit only by a rotating torch suspended from the ceiling (which directs a spot of light around the room) and a few hanging lights. This use of lighting draws the viewer in, pulling you towards the work, enticing you to inspect it more closely. 

 

The exhibits are displayed on varying levels, some are presented in cabinets on the floor, whereas others are hung up high, causing your eye to travel around the room, taking it in as a whole as well as studying each piece individually. 

 

Wandering around the exhibition gives you a sense of calm. It presents a fascinating and thought-provoking display of two very different ways of viewing and interacting with the world. You are able to bring your own set of associations to the exhibition, as well as take something away from it. The modern set up of the exhibition lends itself well to the exhibits, focusing your attention on each one and making you want to give everything a second look. This exhibition is definitely worth a visit and these two up and coming artists are definitely ones to watch!
