Quiet Revolution

Some things just work, like 'Quiet Revolution' at Milton Keynes Gallery (MKG), a show curated by Chris Fite-Wassilak, winner of the first Hayward Curatorial Open. Quiet Revolution brings together international artists David Beattie (Ireland), Margrét H. Bl'ndal (Iceland), Matt Calderwood (UK) Alice Channer (UK) Hreinn Friöfinnsson (Iceland), Mitzi Pederson (US) and Joëlle Tuerlinckx (Belguim), who work with everyday basic objects transforming what we recognise into something else. Drawing on materials and objects, such as rubber, fabric, buckets, mirrors, gloves and a few kilos of flour, they create their own sculptural configurations. Running through each of the works are clear commonalities in theme and sensibility; a domestic and minimal aesthetic and conceptual approach, while still deploying their own subtle articulations and sense of formalism. The exhibition is like a distillery of ideas; each piece is gently bubbling, beckoning the viewer to engage, for there are simple and pure forces to be reckoned with. A wry humour and awkwardness is apparent throughout the exhibition and sometimes you feel that you are on the edge of uncertainty. The exhibition...
