Limbo Arts was formed in 2002 by a small group of artists and arts professionals, who felt there was a need in Margate to support artists and artist communities often seen to be working 'out on a limb', or on the edge. It makes its own a definition by writer and filmmaker Roland Denning, where "Limbo is the art of bending over backwards to pass under seemingly impossible obstacles or balanced perilously between art heaven and corporate hell"." In 2003 Limbo took on a disused electric-substation off Margate High Street and converted it into a gallery/project space and studios, creating a resource for artists living locally and helping to attract artists from outside the area. Through a combination of shows, commissions, residencies and related events, working with established and emerging artists, Limbo has wanted to create new points of reference or entry through which an audience can approach otherwise difficult or unfamiliar concepts. Paul Hazelton explains: "Artists must often work in Limbo, and this is where we take our name. We are keen to invite collaboration between artists and practitioners from other fields." Previous collaborators include Whitstable Biennale, Margate Rocks, Creative Partnerships Kent, Braziers International Artists Workshops, Christ Church University College Canterbury, Crate, and Turner Contemporary. Limbo is run by a team of volunteers, which comprises of a board of directors and a curatorial team.
